“I didn’t care for the publicity”
At a glance, Paul Robbie’s life seems fairly
ordinary. He was born and raised in Sisseton,
SD. Like many boys at that time, he learned how
to hunt and fish—two pastimes he enjoyed all
his life, exploring the state’s prairies, Badlands,
and rivers. Through high school, Paul worked as
assistant manager at JC Penny and then moved
to Mitchell, SD, where he managed the city’s
country club with his father. Later, he moved to
Sioux Falls, where he worked as a manager of the
Cataract Hotel and in the office supplies business.
Until last year, Paul was still working at Brown
and Saenger.
But there are also a few not-so-ordinary details
about Robbie’s life—such as starting the Miami
Dolphins football team with his brother Joe
Robbie in 1966.
“My brother, Joe, was an attorney and had a
client in Florida in 1965, and asked me to go
with him,” says Paul. “While we were there, we
ran into Joe Foss, who was Commissioner of the
American Football League (AFL) at the time.”
Foss, also a South Dakota native, and the first
Commissioner of the AFL, asked the brothers if
they wanted to start a football franchise in Miami,
Florida, and if they could raise the money.
Starting the Miami Dolphins
“Raising the money was easy; football was a good
investment. We talked with people we knew and
banks in the East, and later that year we obtained
the AFL franchise in Miami,” says Paul. His
brother then moved to Florida with his family
to become the general manager and eventually
the owner of the Miami Dolphins. “I didn’t care
for the publicity and preferred to stay in South
Dakota, so remained a stakeholder,” says Paul.
After successfully raising the money to start the
franchise, the Robbie brothers experienced some
serious challenges the first couple seasons. “This
was the first time we’d done something like this,
so of course we made some mistakes. We didn’t
have the right
coaches or
right players,
and we
weren’t doing
well. We were
losing and
deep in debt,”
says Paul.
In 1970, Don
Shula, former
coach of the
Baltimore
Colts, was
hired as the
new head
coach for
the Miami
Dolphins.
“Shula helped
turn things
around and recruited the right players,” says
Paul, “and we went to the Super Bowl in 1971,
1972, and 1973.”
The Dolphins faced the Dallas Cowboys at the
Tulane Stadium in New Orleans for Super Bowl
VI but lost 24-3. Returning to the Super Bowl
playoffs in 1972, the Dolphins were undefeated,
17-0 and won Super Bowl VII, 14-7, against the
Washington Redskins.
“We were the NFL’s first team to finish the
season and playoffs undefeated,” says Paul, “and
1972 is the only year the Dolphins have been
undefeated.” In 1973, the Dolphins made it to
the Super Bowl championship again, defeating
the Minnesota Vikings, 24-7, at Houston’s Rice
Stadium.
“Those were really some great years that put
the Dolphins on the map,” says Paul. “It was
a highlight to be on the sidelines during those
games and to be involved with the team for nearly
