Colloque: CRISES ET REPRISES AU MOYEN ÂGE :
“From war to diplomacy: the change in the Mediterranean strategy of Pisa (X-XII centuries)”
Thanks to the latest studies we can now better explain the rapid expansion of Pisa in the Mediterranean sea from the end of the X century. This expansion was not completely unexpected, since it was preceded by several actions setting the Pisan fleet as a force in defense of Christianity in the name of the main institutions: Empire, Papacy and especially the March of Tuscany. With keen focus on this background, the lecture aims to relate the stages of Mediterranean expansion of Pisa from the XI to the middle of the XII century, to see which spaces were really of interest for the Tuscan city, such as its strategy statement and the chosen tools. Moments of crisis and recovery, perhaps more correctly "moments of juncture", were surely the X century, the Gregorian Reform and the middle of the XII century: these moments will be examined looking both at historical and archeological sources. The last phase is especially interesting because the Mediterranean strategy led by Pisa (and then by Genoa) changed drastically, veering towards the creation of a business-diplomatic network and leaving the instrument of war. When and why did this happen?
