Castor Acreage and COP:
• Castor acreage is stagnant in last 7-8 years between 9 - 11 lakh ha.
• Floods during 2017/18 has led to higher acreage as Kharif crops viz., Cotton and Groundnut
failed. Else acreage would have remain lower or same.
• Castor being 8 month crop is the least remunerative when compared to combination of
other crops.
• Penetration of spices crops such as Jeera are gaining acreage at the cost of Castor.

Castor Oil and Sebacic Acid Prices:
• Castor Oil prices are almost stagnant in last three years while Sebacic Acid prices have
surged by 39.6%.
• From Jan, 15 till mid June, 16, Oil prices where in decreasing trend but Sebacic acid prices
were in increasing trend. During 2017 Sebacic Prices rallied sharply but Castor Oil prices
continued to remain lower.

• 2017 was an exception when prices rallied after the conference
• Barring two years prices have fallen significantly after the conference.
• Prices fell by almost 7-17% in five years with an average fall of around 7-8%.
• Higher supply amid higher visible stocks dragged the prices lower during 2015 and 2016
while lower production along with demonetisation saw a prices rally in 2017.
• Improvement in production amidst record prices dragged prices sharply lower during 2011
while record Castor production during 2012 led to price fall in 2012.
