DISCIPLESHIP Lesson 10
“ And do everything in a decent and orderly manner” 1 Corinthians, 14: 40 GOD IS A GOD OF ORDER “ by his [God’s] wise design the heavens have been stretched out” Jeremiah, 10: 12
ORDER IN HEAVEN The angels are divided into several command levels to carry out various functions: Seraph (Isaiah, 6: 2) Cherubim (Genesis, 3: 24 NIV) Archangel (1 Thessalonians, 4: 16) Angel ( 2 Chronicles, 32: 21 NIV ) …
ORDER ON EARTH “ Moses chose capable men from all Israel, and he made them heads over the people, rulers of thousands , rulers of hundreds , rulers of fifties , and rulers of tens ” Exodus, 18: 25
God has established order in which there must be leaders and servants, teachers and disciples.
A rabbi in Jesus’ time chose his disciples from the most outstanding students in the schools of the synagogues. Then, he could only continue with the most prominent. Those who finally joined the "school" of the rabbi were the best educated.
When Jesus was on earth, he had disciples who followed him; he chose twelve among them who formed his close circle: the apostles. When he chose his disciples and apostles, Jesus did not care about their preparation or their intellectual abilities; he thought about what they would become with Him.
Each of us can be disciples of Jesus.
WHAT DOES JESUS ASK FROM HIS DISCIPLES? Obedience (Hebrews, 5: 9) Loyalty (Matthew, 10: 32) Sacrifice (Mark, 8: 34) Following the Master in everything He orders us. Following the Master in every circumstance. Following the Master, relinquishing ourselves.
“ [Jesus] became the source of eternal salvation to all who obey him ” (Hebrews, 5: 9) OBEDIENCE “ Obedience--the service and allegiance of love--is the true sign of discipleship. Thus the Scripture says, "This is the love of God, that we keep His commandments." "He that saith, I know Him, and keepeth not His commandments, is a liar, and the truth is not in him." 1 John 5:3; 2:4 . Instead of releasing man from obedience, it is faith, and faith only, that makes us partakers of the grace of Christ, which enables us to render obedience” E.G.W. ( Steps to Christ, ch. 7, p. 60 )
“ Whoever, then, acknowledges me before people, I will acknowledge before my Father in heaven ” (Matthew, 10: 32) LOYALTY “ Let us, in the few probationary hours left us, walk humbly with God and do the work He has committed to our hands with fidelity” E.G.W. ( The Upward Look, p. 222 )
SACRIFICE E.G.W. ( Counsels on Health, p. 511 )
THE REWARDS OF DISCIPLESHIP “ Then Peter said to him, «Look, we have left everything to follow you! What then will there be for us?»” Matthew , 19: 27
THE REWARDS OF DISCIPLESHIP “ Jesus said, «I tell you the truth, there is no one who has left home or brothers or sisters or mother or father or children or fields for my sake and for the sake of the gospel who will not receive in this age a hundred times as much – homes, brothers, sisters, mothers, children, fields, all with persecutions– and in the age to come, eternal life »” Mark , 10: 29-30
Our feelings can not be shared out between Jesus and the world. “ No servant can serve two masters, for either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other ” (Luke, 16: 13) We are disciples of only one Lord, who we owe our loyalty.
Jesus is our Lord, He is the Sovereign over our whole life, over all we think, say and do. “ Every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord to the glory of God the Fat” Philippians, 2: 11
