DELINQUENT TAX LIST
CATAWBA COUNTY
TAX LIENS IN
TODAY’S EDITION
From staff reports
NEWTON — A true bill of
indictment was returned by
the Catawba
County grand
jury on Tuesday
for a Caldwell
County man ac-
cused of a dou-
ble murder.
Eric Terril
Yount, 22, of
Granite Falls, was indicted on
two counts of murder for the
shooting deaths of 22-year-
old Richelle Scott Lail and 28-
year-old Cody William Watts
that occurred at McDonald’s
restaurant in Hickory last
week.
Yount also was indicted on
charges of discharging a fire-
arm into an occupied vehicle
and possession of a stolen
motor vehicle.
The initial investigation
by Hickory Police Depart-
ment showed that Lail and
Watts were employees at the
McDonald’s on U.S. 321 in
Hickory and met there just
before 6 p.m. March 2.
Yount showed up and
rammed Watts’ truck with his
SUV. When Lail confronted
Yount, an argument ensued,
and the defendant allegedly
shot and killed her. He then
began shooting into Watts’
truck, hitting him several
times.
Watts was transported to
Wake Forest Baptist Medi-
cal Center in Winston-Salem
where he died late on Friday,
March 4, as a result of the in-
juries he suffered in the shoot-
ing. Following the shootings,
Yount fled the scene and at-
tempted to hide his SUV at a
school in Catawba County.
He stole a truck from a near-
by car lot and later turned
himself in at Lenoir Police De-
partment in Caldwell County
some three hours after the
shootings.
Victoria Jayne has been ap-
pointed to represent Yount,
who had no prior criminal re-
cord. He remains incarcerated
in the Catawba County Deten-
tion Center without bond.

NC PRIMARIES

Editor’s note: This is the first
story in a series on the North
Carolina primary elections.
HICKORY—Fromearlyvoting
andtheMarch15primarytothe
June 7 congressional contest,
here’s what you need to know:
Early voting started Thurs-
day for North Carolina prima-
ries and runs through March
12. If you haven’t already, you
can find an early voting polling
place through the North Caro-
lina State Board of Elections
website .
If you missed the Feb. 19 reg-
istration deadline, you can still
register and vote early. You’ll
need an identifying document,
a list of which you can find at
ncvoterguide.org .
The March 15 primary will de-
cide which candidates make it
to the Nov. 8 elections in races
for president, U.S. Senate, gov-
ernor, attorney general, lieuten-
ant governor, General Assembly
seats and other state and local
races.
Also on the ballot is a $2 bil-
lion bond referendum — Gov.
Pat McCrory’s Connect N.C.,
aimed at repairing, renovating
and expanding education fa-
cilities and agriculture research,
among other things.
Of course, only registered Re-
publicans are eligible to vote
in the GOP primary, and only
Democrats are able to vote in
the Democratic primary, while
independents can choose.
“Unaffiliated voters can
choose which primary they
would like to vote in, but they
can only vote in one,” said
Amanda Duncan, Catawba
County Board of Elections
director.

WHAT IS A PRIMARY?
» A primary is a state-level
election. It is used to determine
candidates for general elections.
» States can hold three different
types of primaries:
» Open primary: Any
registered voter may
participate in any party’s
primary.
» Semi-open primary:
Voters who are registered to a
specific party may vote in
their party’s primary.
Unaffiliated voters may vote
in either party’s primary.
» Closed primary: This
primary type is only open to
members that are registered
to a political party.
Independents or other
party members cannot vote
in a party’s primary.
