DEATH
 Any death should be handled with
carefully- to avoid any catastrophe or bad
luck
 During death: family of the dead, will hit
the ‘gong’
 The body should be left in the house for 2
days before being putting into ‘bajau’
 ‘Tajau’ will be closed with woods , small
lamp will be placed on top of it to scare
off ghosts and demons
 Day 2: 12a.m- ‘tajau’ will be brought out
of the room, family members will be
crying and circling around it
 Day 3: Men in the family will go to the
cemetery to check on the grave
 Day 4: Family members will be having
fun-respect the last night of the dead in
the house
BAJAU
DEATH:-
Guarding the grave
- Done for 7 days
- As a safety precaution: to avoid the ‘balan-
balan’
- The men will be guarding the grave
- The women will stay at the dead’s house with
his family
IBAN
PREGNANCY:
The husband:
-cannot cut down trees= continuous bleeding during delivery
process
-cannot break eggs with knife / stick=baby might be born blind
-cannot bring tortoise into the room
-cannot plant any banana tree= avoid the baby from having big
head
The wife:
- Do not spill any kind of oil on palm
MELANAU
DURING PREGNANCY
 Women cannot eat smelly fruit- avoid body adour
 Cannot eat hunted animals- the baby will be burnt
 The husband:-
- Cannot cut off woods on top of other woods
- Cannot eat ‘pari’- baby will be deformed(lips)
- Cannot attended any death- baby will be dead with no reason
 Women cannot be scared off- affect the unborn baby
AFTER GIVING BIRTH
 Cannot be saying good things about the baby
 They feel more proper to say that the baby is ugly

  • 1.
