3. Birth (Date and Location)
I was born on January 1st, 1752 at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania
4. Early Life
I was born into a Quaker family. I had a simple
life, with Quaker meetings twice a week. I wore
plain clothing, and I wasn’t allowed to play
music or cards, dance, read fiction or go to the
theater.
5. Education
I went to a public school until I was 12 years old. I love to sew and do needle work.
That became my trade after I finished school.
6. Adult Life
I secretly married John Ross a non Quaker on November 4, 1773.
My parents did not approve of this marriage because of his different
religion.
We opened an upholstery shop in Philadelphia. It was slow at first
but then it became busier.
My husband, John, died and then I married Joseph Ashburn and
then John Claypoole.
I continued my business throughout the rest of my life as a
seamstress.
7. Accomplishments
I made the first American flag. I suggested to George
Washington that a 5 point star will look better than a 6
point star and he agreed. That is why our stars have 5
points.
8. Impact on the World
The American flag I made helped unite the 13 colonies during
the Revolutionary War. We now had a symbol which
represented all colonies and eventually our nation.
