Intelligent Speed Adaptation
Dr. Ulrich Veh
Safety Director
2. FIRSTOPTION–TRAFFICSIGNRECOGNITION
A video camera acquires the image of the
road in front of the vehicle
A processing unit recognizes the relevant
traffic sign
The information is displayed to the driver
and/or used to set the speed limiter/Adaptive
Cruise Control
Main issues
Not clear when the limit expires
Quality and position of traffic signs
Occlusions
Environmental conditions
Extra information to be interpreted
Intrinsic limits (city borders)
3. SECONDOPTION–DIGITAL MAPSWITHSPEED
LIMIT INFORMATION –STATIC MAP
The speed limits are stored in the digital maps, for
each road segment
Based on GPS and road geometry the system
recognizes which road segment the vehicle is
travelling
The information is displayed to the driver and/or
used to set the speed limiter/Adaptive Cruise
Control
Main issues
Complete coverage of the EU road network
Extra information inclusion
No temporary speed limits (road works)
Maps update
Coherence (maps-traffic sign)

5. ROLEOFTHEINFRASTRUCTURE
Complete and appropriate information will convince the
driver to use properly the ISA information, adopting them
also to control the vehicle, setting the speed limiter or ACC
target speed.
The impact of ISA will depend to:
• Harmonization at European level on the criteria to
define the speed limit of a road. Adopt user acceptable
criteria whenever possible
• Complete coverage, including temporary speed limits.
• Continuous maintenance of the information (traffic sign
quality, maps update, etc.)
6. FEASIBLE SOLUTIONS
1. (Option 1) Extension of Lane detection sensor
– Same sensor
– Processing unit with more power/memory
2. (Option 2) Extending eCall
– No extra cost for GPS – use the eCall module
– Limited cost for maps, only memory
Free-of-charge EU maps with only road
geometry useful for map-matching and speed
limit information
– Simple processing unit – performing only map
matching
Driver interface
– Speed limit sign/information
– Simple haptic
– Possibility to set speed limiter/ACC by the driver
512 Mb – (1 unit)
7. PROPOSAL
Benefits have to differentiate between speeding/inappropriate speed.
Robust infrastructures/input needed
Initially as an advisory function, if speed limit information is available,
it will be used
Always overridable by the driver
For safety reasons, the driver shall always be kept in the loop before
activating a new speed limit information.
Improvement of education to make drivers aware of the risks
Improvement of enforcement to reduce speeding
Next steps:
EU Speed limit maps – free of charge
Requirements on traffic signs (quality, position, harmonization)
– Signs that vehicles can read
