A chest X-ray performed on a hypoxic patient receiving mechanical ventilation in the Critical Care Unit revealed significant areas of lobar atelectasis (collapsed alveoli). The ventilator setting was subsequently set to provide positive pressure at the end of expiration (PEEP). Potential complications that may arise from the application of PEEP would include: A. decreased functional residual capacity B. increase in dynamic compression of the airways C. increase in number of lung units perfused under Zone 3 conditions increase pulmonary vascular resistance and physiologic dead space E. none of the above.
