ADDICTION & THEATRE THE SEARCH FOR THE “TO BE OR NOT
TO BE “CENTRE”
Are there examples of addiction in the works of great playwrights? Why do we attend the
theatre? Is there a relationship with live performance and the brain? Is there a difference
between live performance and film/television? Perhaps this will raise more questions than answers.
Are there examples of addiction in the works of great playwrights? Why do we attend the theatre? Is

11.30AM - 1.00PM PRESENTED BY PROFESSOR PHILIP JAMES
AND DR. FRANK LAWLISS
OXYGEN AND BRAIN PLASTICITY
Professor James will challengingly question -Why we are in the Middle
Ages for oxygen treatment? Oxygen has been side lined by the medical
field as a treatment for many health issues including addiction and what
we can do about it? Professor James explains how medicine has long forgotten that oxygen itself is a
treatment and how an increasing amount of evidence is proving that increased volumes of oxygen to the
body can positive effects in many areas including healing the brain, The oxygen we breathe is repairing
and regenerating tissues all the time.
Dr. Lawlis will present relevant factors of the influence of Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT) on
healing the disease of addiction. The concept of psychoneuroplasticity, which highlights the principles
of brain pattern change in addiction rehabilitation, will be presented as foundational to the process. The
multiphasic, sequential process of addiction rehabilitation will be reviewed; the first phase of healing the
brain with the same principle that a broken bone requires healing before physical rehabilitation can be
beneficial; the second phase of correcting brain patterns from addiction thinking; and the third phase of
addressing co-occurring diagnoses. QEEG profiles will be presented that represent patients with addiction
disease, then applications of HBOT as relevant to the three stages of rehabilitation will be reviewed.
Professor Philip James is an internationally known specialist in hyperbaric and diving medicine. He
is Director of the Wolfson Hyperbaric Medicine Unit Ninewells Hospital, Dundee, Scotland, UK. He
lectured in Hyperbaric Medicine at Dundee University Medical School. He has lectured around the
world and is well known for his work on the Blood Brain Barrier which has particular relevance in
addiction medicine.
Dr. Frank Lawlis Ph.D., A.B.P.P. received his Ph.D. from Texas Tech University with an emphasis on
Medical Psychology. He has pioneered research and clinical methods in research methodology and
statistics, imagery techniques (cancer), pain perception and rehabilitation, biofeedback, transpersonal
psychology, and most recently, psycho-neuro-plasticity.

2.00PM - 3.30PM PRESENTED BY DR. PAUL HOKEMEYER
& JAN GERBER
THE CURSE OF THE SPOTLIGHT: THE CHALLENGES OF
CELEBRITY CULTURE IN ADDICTION TREATMENT
For centuries, the bright lights of celebrities have been extinguished and
diminished by the force of addictions and other behavioural health issues
far too soon. In this empirically based presentation, Dr. Paul Hokemeyer, an internationally renowned
expert on the clinical and cultural needs of celebrity patients will be joined by Jan Gerber, founder of
Paracelsus Recovery, the world’s most exclusive treatment center to discuss why the force of celebrity
seduces and destroys not just the celebrity, but also the treatment team around them. The participants will
leave the workshop with an understanding of the pernicious impact of celebrity on the human beings who
live under the weight of its force as well as treatment strategies to effectively utilize the transference and
countertransference inherent in it.
Dr. Paul Hokemeyer is an internationally recognised expert on treating the clinical issues that arise at
the intersection of wealth, power, celebrity and behavioural health. Paul holds doctorates in psychology
and law and is a clinical member of the American Association of Marriage and Family Therapists and
has received his certification as a clinical trauma professional.
Jan Gerber is the founder of Paracelsus Recovery in Zürich, Switzerland, and the clinic’s director. He
is a board member of several private clinics and healthcare providers in Switzerland and has many
years of experience in setting up and managing addiction treatment providers, as well as medical
clinics. He founded Paracelsus Recovery with the aim to provide the best possible treatment for
each individual client, treating one client at a time, by tailoring the treatments to the client’s specific
situation and needs.
Hosted by Paracelsus
4.00PM - 5.30PM PRESENTED BY DR. ALBERTO PERTUSA
OCD, HOARDING DISORDER AND BDD: A PRACTICAL UPDATE
OCD and Hoarding Disorder are fascinating but damaging conditions and BDD is a problem
that often goes unrecognised. This presentation aims to understand and recognise symptoms
and to discuss the available treatment options. Standard psychiatric classifications
consider these disorders (and other such as Trichotillomania and Hypochondriasis) within
the category of Obsessive Compulsive Spectrum Disorders.
Dr. Alberto Pertusa trained as a Psychiatrist in Barcelona in 2006 before completing a PhD at the
Institute of Psychiatry (King’s College London) which was key in the conceptualisation of hoarding as
an independent disorder, separate from obsessive-compulsive disorder. This disorder has been coined
Hoarding Disorder and has now been included in the most recent edition of the DSM-5.

MONDAY 1st May - LANCASTER SUITE 2.00PM - 3.30PM PRESENTED BY DR. MARIA KELLY AND
PROFESSOR JONATHON CHICK
SYMPOSIUM ON PRESCRIBED DRUG MISUSE AND
ADDICTIONS TREATMENT
This presentation reviews appropriate and inappropriate psychiatric diagnosing and prescribing for
treatment of addiction patients: Depression, anxiety, mood swings and occasionally psychotic symptoms
are recognised symptoms in addiction to mind-altering substances. Sufferers may precipitate GPs
and psychiatrists into inappropriate psychiatric diagnosis and thus unhelpful prescribing. Powerful
antidepressants, antipsychotics and anti-epileptic drugs get prescribed with confusing affect: in the case
of SSRIs and some antipsychotics relapse rates can be increased. Managing misuse and addiction of
prescribed analgesics: The marketing of addictive medications such as tramadol and oxycodone for
chronic pain may have contributed to the sudden rise in opiate overdose deaths. Opiates for chronic
pain are not supported by research; Repeat on-computer prescribing and doctor-shopping may lead
to a vicious circle of ‘opiate-induced pain’. The psychopharmacological and social basis of Residential
multidisciplinary addiction treatment will be illustrated from the literature and from Case Studies.
Dr. Maria Kelly is a distinguished consultant psychiatrist with a background in the NHS of general
and forensic psychiatry and the psychiatry of learning disability. Her specialist interests include
psychotherapy and family therapy.
Prof. Jonathan Chick Medical Director, MA (Cantab), MPhil, MBChB, DSc, FRCPsych, FRCPE. Professor

BUILDING RESILIENCE IN YOUTH, FAMILIES, AND COMMUNITIES
Adolescents and young adults find themselves at a critical developmental juncture - add
mental health challenges, trauma, and/or addiction and responsible adulthood just becomes
even more complicated. How will they handle it? To whom do they turn for solutions? How can
they find the resilience needed in order to thrive? How can they avoid the path to addiction and/or
violence? At just such a crossroads, research and practical experience tells us that family systems become
absolutely critical in addressing and overcoming these challenges. Dr. Landau’s ground breaking, evidence-
based research provides insight and tools to emphasize the importance of family systems and collaborative
care when dealing specifically with youth.
Dr. Judith Landau, child, family and community neuropsychiatrist and former professor of psychiatry
and family medicine, has specialised in trauma, addiction and co-occurring disorders for 40+ years,
exploring how to facilitate resilience and healing for individuals, families and communities. Dr. Landau

THE INVISIBLE LION: PSYCHOEDUCATION FOR
NEUROBIOLOGICALLY INFORMED HEALTHCARE
Many people suffer from mental, emotional, behavioural and physical problems that are
difficult to define. Their diagnoses are often little more than pseudo-explanations offering no
more than a description of the problem itself. This presentation explains these symptoms from
the perspective of ‘the invisible lion’, the body’s hidden response to threat.
Benjamin Fry is the founder of Khiron House, a residential and outpatient facility which uses
neurobiological healthcare as the model for treating mental health and behavioural disorders, including
addictions. He is a trained psychotherapist and a published author whose interests in treatment
followed his own successful treatment for PTSD in Arizona in 2009.

DRAMATHERAPY & RECOVERY - THE HERO’S JOURNEY
In this experiential workshop, Simon will introduce some basic elements of Dramatherapy,
based on his own practice with recovering addicts. Using aspects of Paul Rebilot’s ‘Hero’s
Journey’, and Jung’s archetypes, we will explore the roles of the “Hero” and “Saboteur”. How
can they offer deeper insight into recovery, integration and relapse prevention? Discover
the healing potential of Dramatherapy and how it can help transform your clients’ lives. No previous
experience of drama is necessary.
Simon Marks is a Dramatherapist, LGBT+ group facilitator and drug and alcohol counsellor. He
completed his Masters at the University of Roehampton in 2016, specialising in addiction, recovery
and LGBT+ mental and sexual health. He trained and worked at Mount Carmel rehab centre in

DYNAMIC FAMILY RECOVERY: APPLYING EFFECTIVE CONFLICT RESOLUTION
THEORY AND SKILLS
Seen through the eyes of a Family Mediator, and drawing on techniques and theory from
sources as diverse as Hostage Negotiation and Michel Foucault’s Power Relations, conflict
within the family is viewed as an opportunity for positive change…but one that has to be carefully facilitated.
Rupert Potier following a career in Financial PR, trained as an Integrative Psychotherapist at The
Metanoia Institute and a Mediator at CEDR, moving on to complete a Masters Degree with the Institute
of Family Therapy and Birkbeck College, University of London. He has mediated disputes in family,
commercial and community situations.
4.00PM - 5.30PM PRESENTED BY DR. FIONA MCKINNEY
FEMALE SEX ADDICTION: A FORGOTTEN POPULATION?
Female sex addiction is a narrow and often overlooked dimension in the field of addiction
psychology and research. It has perhaps been located erroneously in a more male dominated
paradigm. This presentation will consider the tensions and challenges for clinicians who
work with female sex addiction in terms of definition, diagnoses, assessment and treatment
and argue for a more gender sensitive approach to clinical intervention. We will explore female sex
addiction as a condition underpinned by a woman’s early attachment disruption and as such consider the
therapeutic repair to these clients’ derailed capacity for affect regulation as a central therapeutic concern
and treatment outcome.
Dr. Fiona McKinney is a chartered psychologist, integrative psychotherapist and independent
researcher. Working from a developmental-relational perspective with a specific focus on issues
of affective dysregulation and trauma, Fiona sees addictive processes as being underpinned by an
individual’s disorganisation of self-cohesion and self/other connection. She is a research supervisor
and examiner on the Metanoia Doctorate in Counselling Psychology and Psychotherapy by Professional
Studies.

THE INVISIBLE GEOGRAPHY OF ADDICTION TREATMENT: CULTURE AND IT’S
IMPACT ON OUTCOMES
Clinicians need to be equipped not only with the science of addiction treatment but also
have the ability to appreciate and integrate the socio cultural concepts into the treatment
approaches. Core beliefs and values of this group of people will not be in line with their
physical appearances or the therapists’ worldviews and clinicians need to appreciate this fact.
Goode et al. (2006) in their study state that the ability to provide culturally specific and sensitive counselling
leads to better client self-disclosure, greater willingness to continue treatment, better client satisfaction
with counselling sessions as well as better counsellor credibility. This talk looks deeper into examining
the cultural aspect with the various socio-cultural influences in addictions treatment. It discusses the
parameters and external variables influencing addictions and how to improve treatment outcomes with
this appreciation employing specific tools and scientific methodologies.

WHY SAYING THE UNSAID MAY BE THE HARDEST AND MOST IMPORTANT THING
YOU WILL EVER DO
For us to remain effective catalysts for change, we must be anchored in our most valuable
relationships. With over fifteen years of working alongside thousands of mental health

the costs associated with not only speaking up but also showing up, including how to navigate healthy
conversations with our clients and team members. The environments we create contribute as much to the
healing process as they contribute to the suffering. The ANCHOR model will be explored as an effective
means to improving client outcomes and our quality of life.

11.30 – 13.00PM - THE CRISIS OF CREDIBILITY
IN ADDICTION TREATMENT: AND WHAT
CONSTITUTES CREDIBILITY ANYWAY?
Discussion Panel on outcomes and practice
• What is Outcomes Informed treatment?
• The Challenge of bridging the gap between
Research and Treatment
• The Crisis of Credibility In Treatment
• The Need to measure Quality in Treatment
• The Challenge of 12 step and science immersion
• Challenges in measuring outcomes
• Providing Client Driven Care
This discussion panel on outcomes and practice
looks, discusses, and answers on the increasing
need to demonstrate program efficacy and
competition for limited resources, many addiction
treatment programs have developed a renewed
interest in collecting outcomes.
PANELISTS

at Kings College, with a MSc in Mental Health
Studies, alongside management and leadership at
Ashridge Business School and the Sir Christopher
Harding Leadership Programme.

16.00-17.30PM - GLOBAL INTEGRATION: THE
NEED TODAY FOR STANDALONE ADDICTION
SERVICES TO STRATEGIZE BEYOND THEIR
EXISTING ACTIVITIES, CONSIDERING
SOLUTIONS TOWARDS SUSTAINABILITY.
It is clear that Substance Use Disorders (SUD)
providers globally, who only provide isolated related
services are closing in the UK and Internationally
Currently, many providers find themselves in the
unsustainable position of managing a greater
number metal and medical risks, than they are being
paid to manage, with unmaintainable fee structures
for increased complexed needs services.
NICE endorses residential treatment for people
seeking abstinence who have significant comorbid
physical, mental health or social problems.
For stand-alone addiction treatment providers
to survive, must they consider new, innovative
contractual solutions that focus on motivating
integration of care between multiple providers.
QUESTIONS FOR PANEL
1. Sustainability of the standalone addiction
treatment provider.
2. Is there still room for specialty providers in the
continuum of care?
3. If not, what are the implications?
4. Integrating with Mental health services
5. Expanding behavioural modification services to
a wider Health Care Perspective*
*Since speciality providers are really in the business
of behaviour modification, would it make sense
for them to look at applying their behavioural
modification expertise to areas of chronic disease
like Diabetes.

Hosted by Castle Craig Hospital 11.30AM - 1.00PM PRESENTED BY PROFESSOR PHILIP JAMES AND DR. FRANK LAWLISS OXYGEN AND BRAIN PLASTICITY Professor James will challengingly question -Why we are in the Middle Ages for oxygen treatment? Oxygen has been side lined by the medical field as a treatment for many health issues including addiction and what we can do about it? Professor James explains how medicine has long forgotten that oxygen itself is a treatment and how an increasing amount of evidence is proving that increased volumes of oxygen to the body can positive effects in many areas including healing the brain, The oxygen we breathe is repairing and regenerating tissues all the time. Dr. Lawlis will present relevant factors of the influence of Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT) on healing the disease of addiction. The concept of psychoneuroplasticity, which highlights the principles of brain pattern change in addiction rehabilitation, will be presented as foundational to the process. The multiphasic, sequential process of addiction rehabilitation will be reviewed; the first phase of healing the brain with the same principle that a broken bone requires healing before physical rehabilitation can be beneficial; the second phase of correcting brain patterns from addiction thinking; and the third phase of addressing co-occurring diagnoses. QEEG profiles will be presented that represent patients with addiction disease, then applications of HBOT as relevant to the three stages of rehabilitation will be reviewed. MONDAY 1st May - LANCASTER SUITE 2.00PM - 3.30PM PRESENTED BY DR. MARIA KELLY AND PROFESSOR JONATHON CHICK SYMPOSIUM ON PRESCRIBED DRUG MISUSE AND ADDICTIONS TREATMENT This presentation reviews appropriate and inappropriate psychiatric diagnosing and prescribing for treatment of addiction patients: Depression, anxiety, mood swings and occasionally psychotic symptoms are recognised symptoms in addiction to mind-altering substances. Sufferers may precipitate GPs and psychiatrists into inappropriate psychiatric diagnosis and thus unhelpful prescribing. Powerful antidepressants, antipsychotics and anti-epileptic drugs get prescribed with confusing affect: in the case of SSRIs and some antipsychotics relapse rates can be increased. Managing misuse and addiction of prescribed analgesics: The marketing of addictive medications such as tramadol and oxycodone for chronic pain may have contributed to the sudden rise in opiate overdose deaths. Opiates for chronic pain are not supported by research; Repeat on-computer prescribing and doctor-shopping may lead to a vicious circle of ‘opiate-induced pain’. The psychopharmacological and social basis of Residential multidisciplinary addiction treatment will be illustrated from the literature and from Case Studies. Dr. Maria Kelly is a distinguished consultant psychiatrist with a background in the NHS of general and forensic psychiatry and the psychiatry of learning disability. Female sex addiction is a narrow and often overlooked dimension in the field of addiction psychology and research. It has perhaps been located erroneously in a more male dominated paradigm. This presentation will consider the tensions and challenges for clinicians who work with female sex addiction in terms of definition, diagnoses, assessment and treatment and argue for a more gender sensitive approach to clinical intervention. We will explore female sex addiction as a condition underpinned by a woman’s early attachment disruption and as such consider the therapeutic repair to these clients’ derailed capacity for affect regulation as a central therapeutic concern and treatment outcome. Dr. Fiona McKinney is a chartered psychologist, integrative psychotherapist and independent researcher. Working from a developmental-relational perspective with a specific focus on issues of affective dysregulation and trauma, Fiona sees addictive processes as being underpinned by an individual’s disorganisation of self-cohesion and self/other connection. She is a research supervisor and examiner on the Metanoia Doctorate in Counselling Psychology and Psychotherapy by Professional Studies. M onday 1st M ay 2017 7.30pm For one night only!
