The Editor of the NationMagazine inSwaziland,Bheki Makhubu,whowasreleasedfromprisonon
Tuesdayafterspendingmore thanayear injail,isto be guestof honorat the 2015 NatNakasa Awards
dinnerorganizedbySanef,PrintandDigital MediaSA andthe NiemanSocietyof SouthernAfrica.
The awards dinnerwill be heldonSaturdayatthe WanderersClub,Illovo, Johannesburgandwill follow
the annual general meetingof Sanef whichwill take place duringthe day.The guestspeakeratthe
awardswill be JoburgExecutive Mayor,ParksTau.
Makhubuwas jailedtogetherwithhumanrightslawyerandcolumnistThulani Masekoafterthey
publishedandcommentedonthe arrestof a trafficinspectorwhohad stoppedandimpoundedthe
official carof the thenchief justice afterhe foundittobe on unauthorizedtrips.
Followingprotestsbyhumanrightsandmediaorganisationsbothhere andworldwide,the thenchief
justice wasissuedwithawarrantof arrestand has since leftSwaziland.MakhubuandMasekowere
releasedonTuesdaywhenthe state failedtoproduce evidence atan appeal hearing.
Saturdaywill be the firsttime since hisreleasethatMakhubuwill be bothoutof Swazilandand
addressingmediapractitionersabouthisordeal.The Nakasaawardisgivento a SouthAfricanjournalist,
editoror mediamanagerwhohasshowncourage in theirwork.
The Sanef AGM isalsoto launchthe newmediacouncil forbothprintanddigital mediathatwill create a
mechanismforhandlingof complaintsbyaggrievedusersof bothplatforms.The TreasurerGeneralof
the ANC,Dr Zweli Mkhize, isalsoscheduledtoaddressthe Sanef AGMon the ANC’sassertionthattrust
has beenlostbetweenitself andthe SA mediaindustry.
