Karima Brown, a prominent South African journalist, has passed away from COVID-19 complications. She was not only a prolific journalist across print and broadcast media but also a beloved friend, mentor, mother, and colleague who was deeply committed to bringing about a more just and inclusive South Africa. Her family is profoundly grieving the loss but grateful for the support and prayers during her hospitalization. She will be laid to rest in a private Islamic burial ceremony with a public memorial service to be announced later.

passedawaythismorning.She diedfromcovid-19relatedcomplications.
Karimawas notjust a prolificandwell-knownSouthAfricanjournalistandcommentator,withdeep
footprintsinprintandbroadcast media,butalsoandmore importantlyawell-lovedfriend,mentor,
mother,colleague,daughter,andconfidante tocountlesspeople throughoutalife livedfully,and
withdeepcommitmenttohermostcherishedvaluesandprinciples.
We are enormouslyproudof the fierce determinationshe hadshown,since herearlyyears,toget
involvedinbringingaboutamore just,inclusive,andanti-racistSouthAfrica.Thisdeterminationalso
shapedherfearlessapproachtojournalism.She wasdrivenbyaconvictionthatjournalismmustbe
inservice of justice.
We are massivelygratefulforandhumbledbythe countlessmessagesof support,andprayers,
duringKarima’srecenthospitalisation.Thesecomfortusasa familyduringthisprofoundlypainful
experience of loss.
Karimawill be laidtorest ina private burial ceremonywhichwill be heldinaccordance withIslamic
ritesand traditions.A small numberof invitedpersonswillattendthe funeralandall Covid-19
regulationswill be observed.
In due course,an announcementwill be made aboutamore publicmemorial service inhonourof
Karima’slife.
