1. Effortless and Well matched Bicycle Racks for Cars
I’m sure you know what a hassle it can be to load up your bike into your vehicle. A bike racks for cars not
only eliminates this hassle, but it also frees up a bunch of space within your car.
There are various types of bicycle racks for cars, described
here:
Roof Racks
If you already have a standard roof rack on your car, you can buy a bike rack that attaches to it. If you
don't, you can drill holes in the roof of your car and attach a bike rack permanently on your vehicle. Or
you can put up a standard rack for hauling generalized stuff and then get a bicycle rack that will fit it,
which lends you increased versatility in carrying things but requires that you take off the bike rack on
and off.
One other alternative is to get a detachable roof rack with mounting feet that attaches to your car's
door frames or rain gutters. These racks are available for any model and make of car.
Roof racks hold more bicycles than hitch or trunk racks, and they offer the most security from bicycle
thieves. But roof racks are the most challenging to mount, and they reduce your gas mileage and
increase the wind noise from the added wind drag.
Strap-on Trunk Racks
A trunk rack has ties that attach one, two or sometimes three bicycles to your vehicle’s trunk, bumper or
hatchback. The bike’s frame rests on plastic-coated or cushioned support arms.
These fit a wide selection of vehicles, so they’re great if you on occasion rent a car for trips or if you plan
to use the rack for more than one vehicle. These are easy to store and to lift bikes onto.
The shortcomings of these are several. They’re the most liable to damage your vehicle and to get bike
tyres stolen from. You can’t open the trunk when you have one of these on it. You also need to routinely
check the straps to make sure they aren’t fraying or working loose.
Tandem bikes normally aren’t recommended for many types of trunk racks.

2. Hitch Racks
These bicycle racks are attached to a vehicle’s trailer hitch, so they’re less apt to damage the car than a
trunk hitch is. With some of these racks, the bikes have to be secured to the carrier, while with others
set the bicycles in mounting "trays."
It’s easy to install a hitch rack; simply slide it onto your hitch. It’s also simple to lift and secure the bikes
onto the rack. One additional advantage with some of these is that you don’t need to take the bike
wheels off.
However, some of these racks allow the bikes to scratch each other if you don’t take extra precautions
to guard against this. Others are difficult for locking your bikes inner tubes onto. Another disadvantage
is that they block the driver’s line of site out of the back window.
Specialty Racks
A spare tire bicycle rack is made for cars that can carry a spare tire on the rear. These have arms that
collapse or fold down when you aren’t carrying a bike. Some of these can only hold one bike, others
two.
They also make special racks for pickups or for using inside vans or SUVs.
