5. Rodney S. Leon
Who am I as a person?
I am Rodney, a usually cheerful, yet focused multimedia artist of
58 yrs, ex journalist, author, and part time personal coach /
inventor / future philanthropist, and very proud parent.
I enjoy creating order from chaos which probably comes from
being the only son of powerful parents (a professional boxer and
a minister's daughter who later became a probation officer).
I was born very self aware and have always strived to learn and
enhance my understanding of things around me by studying
anything that caught my interest wherever that takes me. Life is
always an interesting adventure.
My own ethnicity is a blend of African American and Native
American (Choctaw Nation) with a pinch of Irish. My mixed
blood gives me a strong appreciation for spiritual forces in
motion and nature.
I was born in Ypsilanti, Michigan and grew up in a small town of
Jackson, Michigan in a friendly racially mixed neighborhood and
basically get along with most reasonable people.
I've retained some of that small town friendliness even though
my favorite cities are Manhattan and Montreal.
Who am I as an artist?
I attended Michigan State University and the CDC School of
Drafting and Design of Lansing, MI where I became an instructor
after finishing the self paced coursework in record time as a
gifted student and for my love of helping others to learn. I've also
taught art from K-6 institutionally for the Lansing Public School
System, and privately for teens and adults needing to upgrade
their skills.
I'm self taught as well as a formally trained artist who has used
my love for detail and deadlines producing studio (portrait /
interior design), architectural, mechanical engineering, and
defense dept. ultra precise technical renderings or illustrations for
4 engineering companies.
While also known for my compelling realistic paintings and
portraits of sensual women of varying ethnicities and peaceful
environments; my other technical works have various elements
gathered from worlds of science, architecture, anthropology, or
whatever limitless details are needed for the specific works in
question whether huge or tiny in size.
6. What shaped and shapes me?
My interesting life began with being born self aware with a caul /
veil on Halloween (the truce between cosmic positive and
negative forces) in 1956.
The veil usually indicates people with unusual perceptual
abilities. In my case sensing lost items like keys, regular déjà vu
experiences or knowing what was going to happen next, sensing
when people / loved ones are in trouble , healing (by presence
and touch), visions of the future which comes in handy when
creating art to inspire folks with.
Being nearsighted has given me an affinity for insane levels of
detail. Being ambidextrous lets me tap both sides of my brain at
once while creating.
My father was a professional boxer. What I got from him was my
mental and physical drive, my will to win, and nuclear smile that
lights up a room.
My mother is a part Choctaw daughter of a minister. What I got
from her was a love for books, laughter, spirituality,
understanding that any obstacle could be overcome.
Mom liked to sample churches so I was baptized 3 times in
different churches. Little did I know that heaven would assign 3
guardian angels to my case. But they do come in handy when I
need advice or help.
I guess that set me up for the energetic life I was to have later.
Since birth I've stared into the sun to see who was stronger on a
given day. I was a bright child with many odd habits like
standing on my head watching tv, sleeping in trees, watching the
stars all night instead of sleeping, etc.
I could read newspapers before I was 2 yrs old so mom put me in
kindergarten at 3 after I asked her "how does electricity work?"
That still didn’t answer my question so I found out myself by
sticking a bobby pin in a wall socket just after a bath so I could
get some energy for myself like the lamps did from there.
Yes I was electrocuted but survived without a scratch even
though I can still see that giant ball of multicolored sparks.
That gave me an affinity for electricity, lightning, and powerful
energies.
The public library became my best friend at an early age.
Whatever I couldn't find at the library I learned while meditating
while being in contact with water. In yoga that's the Water
Samyama Samadhi.
I read all of the books there that interested me then read the
Dictionary for an added mental buzz. The funny thing is that
after reading half you already know what’s in the other half.
In Jackson there wasn’t much else to do but think and develop
your mind.
I was hit by lightning twice when I was 17 while being near the
wrong tree twice during storms.
Because of this I was named Hashuk Mali which is Choctaw for
"Lightning has come to dwell with us".
I finished puberty at 24 because I age very slowly.
I joined the local chapter of Mensa, but left after a year of how
they kept talking about how exceptional it was to find such a
smart black person.
7. .After MSU I went to CDC, a local design school, and became
the #1 student there after I made a stable model of a geodesic
dome for an open house. I taught there for 5 yrs.
I left CDC to work at various engineering companies that
subcontracted for the govt. I later realized that the military
vehicles and weapons we were illustrating were mainly being
used against brown people.
I went back to visit MSU while doing some research.
I ended up working there for 11 yrs with a good safe job with full
benefits etc for my daughter. I worked all day and painted at
night and showed my work on the weekends at whatever shows I
could find or help create.
Finally I came to my creative senses and left in 2005 to paint full
time from home, raise my newborn son (a prince named Ramses
Shaddai Leon hoping he turns out as well as my gorgeous
daughter Yvette did) and sell my work online and seek out more
exposure.
How did I begin?
The veil usually indicates people with unusual perceptual
abilities. In my case sensing lost items like keys, regular déjà vu
experiences or knowing what was going to happen next, or when
loved ones were in danger was common as well as healing thru
touch.
In August 1972, I taught myself to draw on a dare after winning
many consecutive chess games from a high school buddy who
had grown up as an artist since we were two years old in Jackson,
Michigan. He got tired of losing in chess and challenged me to an
art contest that he knew he would win since he had been drawing
his entire life!
(My chess skills were directly the result of learning checkers and
strategy from my great grandfather who taught me how to think
about many things in life.)
It was well known among our friends that I avoided art like a
plague (because I stupidly assumed I couldn't draw).
So much for the validity of doubts eh?
But of course I wasn't backing down from a challenge from
somebody I had just beaten for hours, so I said "let's do it!" In his
snickering generosity he gave me 3 weeks to practice. Thru sheer
willpower I permanently reduced my sleep from 8 to 3 hrs
nightly because of extra time needed for drawing practice and art
studies.
I chose to study photorealism as a primary style because of the
difficulty factor. So I began studying photographs, physics of
optics, lighting, textures, shapes, etc and constantly practice my
hand to eye coordination.
I also trained my eyes to see this reality as though it were
drawings and paintings which truly alters your view of things.
Next I mentally subtracted the difference between drawings and
photos and applied it to my drawings. I even sprayed them with
varnish for that glossy photo look! And of course I whipped his
butt again and easily won the contest...
Exotic Polynesian women from National Geographic in pencil
were my first drawings ever!
Bardot in pencil was my first from magazine photos.
8. Nude Figures in pencil were next because of difficulty.
Sunset in Colored Pencil was next to break out of the fear of
working in color.
Cartooning in realistic 3D in Charcoal pencil was next.
How do I create?
I most often use Films, Inks, Pastels, Oils, and combinations of
multimedia. Next will be laser 3D applications.
I love to create pieces with definite measurable message effects
without being overt in how they were executed.
I thrive on visual subtlety and powerfully healing effects
whereby the viewer has a sensation of "Ahhhhh" and smiles
brightly after seeing my work.
I also like to juxtapose sometimes incongruent elements but
always in a way that is powerfully pleasing to the eye, heart, and
soul. I'm not into shock art unless it clearly produces a clear new
positive awareness.
I see all things as belonging to patterns. We all have things that
enhance us. I try to create to enhance as many people at once as
possible within each piece.
Sometimes I create using mechanical physics and make music
from measured size and relative distances of elements in a room
or living space, or with elements of star charts via things like
relative synodic orbital periods, Fraunhoffer spectral color lines
in physics, or even a cursory analysis of the colors in a
photograph converted to sound by frequency correlation.
My future books will explain these and others in more detail.
I enjoy converting from one sense to another to create what
wasn't there before.
I also use the written word for composition and researching for
90 book titles.
I don't talk this much in person because I like my work to speak
for me.
What am I looking for?
I am looking for agents, collectors, dealers, galleries that
appreciate and want to promote, buy, and sell my work for our
mutual benefit.
I am looking for mid to high end commission work as well as
outlets for reproductions of my created works.
Where can my pieces be found?
My pieces are in private collections in obviously Michigan,
Atlanta GA, Chicago IL, Detroit MI, Portland OR, Houston TX,
Los Angeles CA, New York, Washington DC, (most states)
Australia, Ottawa & Toronto Canada, Dubai, Egypt, Ethiopia,
Guam, India, Indonesia, Jamaica, Japan, Kenya, London UK,

13. VISUAL STYLES
Atmanian:
My own name for complex rendering using basic shapes
or geometric patterns combined to create complex imagery.
Geometric Compositions in Dots
The universe began as a dot before the “Big Bang”.
In India Bindu (dot) is held to be the point at which begins
creation and the point at which the unity becomes the many
So naturally this is the first style shown in this visual
journey thru my skills.

Who composes better than God?
The Creator effortlessly brings the universe into manifestation with
each note of the Celestial Song of Being. Then comes the chorus as
The Bible says, ‘In the beginning was the Word and the Word was
of God and the Word was with God”.
In India the word Aum ( the voice of God , intonation of the sound of
the residual vibrations of the universe’s creation ) is at the beginning
and end of each prayer. We use Amen at the end.

28. NEWEST STYLES
Anthropomorphic Nature Series
Natural objects as human hybrids.
Solarizations
Unreal Surface Textures
If you could see only the aura (energy essence inside
the matter ) of a person or thing you would see it in
solarised form.
These are depictions of the inner essence of those
portrayed here.
In this form you see the energy within
without needing the outer details to recognize them.
Topographic Impressionism:
(A cross between abstract topographic layering and
Photorealism is a new advanced offshoot of
impressionism created by the artist in June 2005.)
It bridges abstract and realistic imagery by using
abstract areas of color instead of dots in a way that has
never been done before in history.
This new style was created by the artist while
flipping thru other works looking for a blank
canvas and had an instant vision of how to do them.!
This is the opposite of the normal viewing. Process.
Normally you come closer to see more detail in a
painting.
With these you see more and more as you back away
thru the closure effect on the mind.
When you're close up they look very abstract.
Far away they look photographically real.
Hold up a mirror (or used CD) and look at these in the
monitor or reflection to see how they look from far
away.
The only drawback is the tedious eyestrain to plan and
execute 10-60 layers!
