INDIANS’ WEEKLY!
December 1, 2011 Volume XI

     PLACE AT COVINA COMPETITION!

Our Maidens’ cheer teams attended the 1st SGVJAAFC competition of the season hosted by the Covina Vikings
organization this past weekend with our Mascot (2nd), JPW (2nd) and JM (3rd) cheer squads coming away with
trophies!

According to Cheer Coordinator Rebecca Acosta:

“Our Mascots were awesome, they did super well even with Alyssa Maldonado feeling sick, they shined!” They are
going to perfect their routine and I feel 1st place is in their hands!”

“The Gremlins should have placed no lower than 3rd or 4th however, we had a technical difficulty that was our
fault, but I’m confident they will place in the next two competitions.”

“The Jr. PeeWee squad had a very good routine (per the judges), so they should be able to tighten up their per-
formance and I don’t doubt they will take 1st Place!”

“The Jr. Midget squad had a few hiccups which they are aware of and know what they need to do in order to fix
them. Going against the likes of Whittier and Charter Oak in the large division...these girls kicked butt!”

In addition, our “Indian Family” (parents & supporters) won the coveted “Spirit Award” for their enthusiasm and
exuberant demonstration of support throughout the competition. This is an award our organization had consis-
tently won in the past, but we had not brought home the “Spirit Trophy” in quite some time.

“Special shout-out goes to Hector Hernandez-Jr. PeeWee parent, he could be heard the loudest over the crowd.”

While the awards speak volumes for the hard work our girls and staff have done throughout the year and the sup-
port of our parents, friends and family, it also tells us about the great job Cheer Coordinator Rebecca Acosta has
done in a short period of time, taking over midway through the season.

Like most jobs in our organization, the Cheer Coordinator position comes with a great salary and plenty of free
time to mingle and socialize throughout the park (humor and sarcasm). Being the Cheer Coordinator for a pro-
gram such as ours, requires great patience, organizational skills, fairness and the ability to be firm on our goals,
policies and procedures. At times, these abilities are tested and fortunately for us, Rebecca has passed with flying
colors. I strongly believe the best is yet to come in future competitions and the upcoming years.

Rebecca and her coaching staffs are preparing for their next competition hosted by the Charter Oak Chargers once
again taking place at Citrus College, which will be the site of all competitions this year.

Our squads plan on traveling to Las Vegas to participate in the JAMZ National Cheer Competition. We invite eve-
ryone who is able, to join us in supporting their venture and make the trip to Vegas for exciting and intense com-
petition. The competition is scheduled to take place January 27th thru January 30th at the Orleans Arena.

VIVA LAS VEGAS!!
         SCOUTS & INDIANS BRING HOME
         GOLD, WARRIORS TAKE *SILVER!
The Scouts (Gremlins), Warriors (PW’s) and Indians (JM’s) traveled to Las Vegas last week and represented the
Montebello Indians in the “Pigskin National Football Tournament,” taking place from Thanksgiving morning
through Saturday, November 26th. And represent they did, coming home with two (2) Gold trophies and one (1)
*Silver trophy.

The Warriors kicked off the tournament against the Bakersfield Falcons, the game pitted two great teams against
each other and saw it tied 6-6 at the half. Staff received a call from tournament directors during halftime telling
them they were playing against the wrong division, the Falcons were 13 year old boys and 20 pounds heavier.

That didn’t faze the staff or players as they proceeded to play and play well. With the game tied at 14-14, on the
last play of regulation, the Warriors appeared to win the game on a 40 yard touchdown pass from QB Adrian Le-
mus to RB Greg Nevarez. However, Nevarez was called for offensive pass interference (very questionable) and the
score was nullified. In the first overtime, each team scored, making the score 22-22. In the 2nd OT, the Falcons
would stop the Warriors and then score to end the game at 30-22. Regardless of what the scoreboard said, our
Warriors won that game!

The Indians would make their debut against the Sacramento Cougars at 8:00 p.m. on Thanksgiving night with the
temperature right around 38 degrees and colder than that when you factor in the wind chill. The Cougars took a 6-
0 lead into halftime and then ran the opening kickoff of the 3rd quarter back 70 yards for a quick 14-0 lead. The
Cougars were confident and rightly so...or so they thought. The Indians didn’t panic and continued to play tough
defense and methodically move the ball to the Sacramento 40 yard line when RB Matt Escalera took the ball
around the left side for a 40 yard touchdown run. On the following possession, RB Raoul Luis took the ball up the
middle then broke wide right and went 55 yards for another touchdown, tying the game at 14-14. That was all the
Indians would need as they dominated the rest of the game and won 29-14.

The Scouts played the only game on Friday for Montebello and they did not miss a beat even though they were
missing key players on their roster. The Scouts completely dominated the Jets from South Ogden Utah, from start
to finish, upsetting the Jets’ coaching staff so much that they refused to bring the team out for the extra point at-
tempt, walking off the field and not shaking hands. Apparently the 22-0 drubbing they took was too much to
bear...or was it the fact they only had a couple first downs in the entire game?

Saturday began with the Scouts playing the Bulls (Los Toros) from San Diego, like the first game, the Scouts did
not allow much to the Bulls’ offense and quickly showed their physical dominance as they had their way with Los
Toros. It was the Scouts who played like “Bulls” blowing San Diego off the offensive and defensive lines. The big-
gest difference between Utah and San Diego was the San Diego team took their beating properly and were good
sports about it. In the end the Scouts would win 19-0 and be crowned Champions, as only the 6th team in tourna-
ment history to walk away without being scored upon! Talk about walking tall! The only thing missing from the
victory was the “Chest Bump” between Head Coach Armando Valencia and Assistant Coach Gil Acosta who was
not able to attend.

Next, the Warriors played the Las Vegas Chargers, defending Conference Champions and undefeated in 2011. Un-
defeated in 2011 until Southern California football proved it’s supremacy, as the Warriors quickly showed their
dominance marching down the field scoring with relative ease. The Chargers’ head coach was ejected after making
inappropriate comments and their coaching staff warned of any more outbursts. While their coaching staff
BARELY kept themselves out of trouble, their parents/supporters could not. After the second touchdown by the
Warriors, the Chargers once again went 3 and out and our “Black” offense went to work. As they drove down the
field and prepared to score, their fans began to make threats towards the referees and that forced the end of the
game. The Chargers basically quit after being taken apart by the Warriors. Final score 14-0. (continued)
(Continued from page 4)

The Warriors were awarded the *Silver Trophy, but were verbally named the Champions as they had proved their
point against a 13 year old team, pushing them into only the 3rd ever Double Over Time game in tournament his-
tory. There is no doubt in anyone’s mind that they would have demolished ANY 12 year old team who would have
been unlucky enough to draw them on their schedule, just ask the Chargers...GOLD!

The final game of the tournament was played by the Indians on Saturday evening at 5:00, the evening was chilly,
but nowhere near as cold as Thanksgiving night. The Indians however, were on fire! Seemingly firing on all cylin-
ders, they destroyed the Las Vegas Saints in every aspect of the game. Coach Leo Briones’ defense was stout and
did not allow the Saints to come near the end zone all night. Defensive lineman Jesus “Chuchin” Castro was in the
opposition backfield all night disrupting almost every play. When Castro wasn’t there, Eduardo Luis or Joshua
Delgadillo were there to fill the gaps. No matter what they tried, the Indians’ defenders were there to foil their at-
tempts.

On the other side of the ball, Offensive Coordinator Cesar Bermejo was methodical in dissecting the Saints’ de-
fense, making every drive count and basically scoring at will. With QB Matt Valencia guiding the offense and RB’s
Abiel Aguilar, Matthew Barba, Raoul Luis and Matt Escalera providing the “ground and pound,” the Saints didn’t
stand a chance.

The Indians would win the game by the score of 27-0 and also be crowned Champions!
When looking back at the Sacramento game, had they not allowed the one long run and the kickoff return, the In-
dians would have been the 7th team in tournament history to leave without being scored upon, just like the Scouts.
In any case, they did great!

It is completely understood that Thanksgiving is a Holiday to be spent with family, breaking bread and sitting
down and being thankful for the things we have and all that God’s Blessings brings us. Many feel that going to a
place like Las Vegas to play in a football tournament takes away from that and for those who feel that way, I’m
sure it does. But once you’ve shared the experience of a tournament that allows you to see opponents you’ve never
seen before and may never see again, I believe you will change your mind. Once you’ve been a part of the mass of
people who have come together for ONE reason and that’s to watch our kids play not just as a team, but as a
“family,” a brother/sisterhood, it’s an amazing feeling of unity.

I can’t think of a better way to give Thanks, than to see our children making use of the abilities they been Blessed
with, as many wished they could. As former Indians’ coach Robert “Spooner” Witherspoon always said; “this
sport isn’t for all kids, it’s only for the special ones, because you have to be special to play this game.”

It is an incredible feeling, standing or sitting on the sideline along with roughly 150-200 “Indians’ Family Mem-
bers,” cheering on our kids who are out there proudly representing the City of Montebello and the Indians organi-
zation. Our parents, friends and supporters outnumbered ALL other cities/organizations in attendance in Las Ve-
gas. It was an awesome feeling walking from one field to another, from one game to another and seeing the “Sea
of Green” that engulfed All-American Park from Thursday thru Saturday!

On Thanksgiving weekend 2011, All-American Park in Las Vegas, Nevada was transformed into Grant Rea Park!
OUR HOUSE!

On behalf of the Montebello Indians Family, I thank all who made the trip and hope to see our numbers grow in
the years to come. Becoming stronger and continuing to build a better program for those who are part of or join
the Indians’ Family I the future. Also, thanks to those who could not make the trip, but made donations, gave of
their time or had the confidence and trust to allow their children to accompany their team in order to accomplish
their goals...and accomplish them they did!

It’s looking like the teams are now going to attend the “Best of the West” Tournament in Chino on December
10th-11th, please come out and support them. Good luck to all!

Indians Weekly #11

  • 1. INDIANS’ WEEKLY! December 1, 2011 Volume XI MASCOT, JR. PEEWEE & JR. MIDGET PLACE AT COVINA COMPETITION! Our Maidens’ cheer teams attended the 1st SGVJAAFC competition of the season hosted by the Covina Vikings organization this past weekend with our Mascot (2nd), JPW (2nd) and JM (3rd) cheer squads coming away with trophies! According to Cheer Coordinator Rebecca Acosta: “Our Mascots were awesome, they did super well even with Alyssa Maldonado feeling sick, they shined!” They are going to perfect their routine and I feel 1st place is in their hands!” “The Gremlins should have placed no lower than 3rd or 4th however, we had a technical difficulty that was our fault, but I’m confident they will place in the next two competitions.” “The Jr. PeeWee squad had a very good routine (per the judges), so they should be able to tighten up their per- formance and I don’t doubt they will take 1st Place!” “The Jr. Midget squad had a few hiccups which they are aware of and know what they need to do in order to fix them. Going against the likes of Whittier and Charter Oak in the large division...these girls kicked butt!” In addition, our “Indian Family” (parents & supporters) won the coveted “Spirit Award” for their enthusiasm and exuberant demonstration of support throughout the competition. This is an award our organization had consis- tently won in the past, but we had not brought home the “Spirit Trophy” in quite some time. “Special shout-out goes to Hector Hernandez-Jr. PeeWee parent, he could be heard the loudest over the crowd.” While the awards speak volumes for the hard work our girls and staff have done throughout the year and the sup- port of our parents, friends and family, it also tells us about the great job Cheer Coordinator Rebecca Acosta has done in a short period of time, taking over midway through the season. Like most jobs in our organization, the Cheer Coordinator position comes with a great salary and plenty of free time to mingle and socialize throughout the park (humor and sarcasm). Being the Cheer Coordinator for a pro- gram such as ours, requires great patience, organizational skills, fairness and the ability to be firm on our goals, policies and procedures. At times, these abilities are tested and fortunately for us, Rebecca has passed with flying colors. I strongly believe the best is yet to come in future competitions and the upcoming years. Rebecca and her coaching staffs are preparing for their next competition hosted by the Charter Oak Chargers once again taking place at Citrus College, which will be the site of all competitions this year. Our squads plan on traveling to Las Vegas to participate in the JAMZ National Cheer Competition. We invite eve- ryone who is able, to join us in supporting their venture and make the trip to Vegas for exciting and intense com- petition. The competition is scheduled to take place January 27th thru January 30th at the Orleans Arena.

  • 4. VIVA LAS VEGAS!! SCOUTS & INDIANS BRING HOME GOLD, WARRIORS TAKE *SILVER! The Scouts (Gremlins), Warriors (PW’s) and Indians (JM’s) traveled to Las Vegas last week and represented the Montebello Indians in the “Pigskin National Football Tournament,” taking place from Thanksgiving morning through Saturday, November 26th. And represent they did, coming home with two (2) Gold trophies and one (1) *Silver trophy. The Warriors kicked off the tournament against the Bakersfield Falcons, the game pitted two great teams against each other and saw it tied 6-6 at the half. Staff received a call from tournament directors during halftime telling them they were playing against the wrong division, the Falcons were 13 year old boys and 20 pounds heavier. That didn’t faze the staff or players as they proceeded to play and play well. With the game tied at 14-14, on the last play of regulation, the Warriors appeared to win the game on a 40 yard touchdown pass from QB Adrian Le- mus to RB Greg Nevarez. However, Nevarez was called for offensive pass interference (very questionable) and the score was nullified. In the first overtime, each team scored, making the score 22-22. In the 2nd OT, the Falcons would stop the Warriors and then score to end the game at 30-22. Regardless of what the scoreboard said, our Warriors won that game! The Indians would make their debut against the Sacramento Cougars at 8:00 p.m. on Thanksgiving night with the temperature right around 38 degrees and colder than that when you factor in the wind chill. The Cougars took a 6- 0 lead into halftime and then ran the opening kickoff of the 3rd quarter back 70 yards for a quick 14-0 lead. The Cougars were confident and rightly so...or so they thought. The Indians didn’t panic and continued to play tough defense and methodically move the ball to the Sacramento 40 yard line when RB Matt Escalera took the ball around the left side for a 40 yard touchdown run. On the following possession, RB Raoul Luis took the ball up the middle then broke wide right and went 55 yards for another touchdown, tying the game at 14-14. That was all the Indians would need as they dominated the rest of the game and won 29-14. The Scouts played the only game on Friday for Montebello and they did not miss a beat even though they were missing key players on their roster. The Scouts completely dominated the Jets from South Ogden Utah, from start to finish, upsetting the Jets’ coaching staff so much that they refused to bring the team out for the extra point at- tempt, walking off the field and not shaking hands. Apparently the 22-0 drubbing they took was too much to bear...or was it the fact they only had a couple first downs in the entire game? Saturday began with the Scouts playing the Bulls (Los Toros) from San Diego, like the first game, the Scouts did not allow much to the Bulls’ offense and quickly showed their physical dominance as they had their way with Los Toros. It was the Scouts who played like “Bulls” blowing San Diego off the offensive and defensive lines. The big- gest difference between Utah and San Diego was the San Diego team took their beating properly and were good sports about it. In the end the Scouts would win 19-0 and be crowned Champions, as only the 6th team in tourna- ment history to walk away without being scored upon! Talk about walking tall! The only thing missing from the victory was the “Chest Bump” between Head Coach Armando Valencia and Assistant Coach Gil Acosta who was not able to attend. Next, the Warriors played the Las Vegas Chargers, defending Conference Champions and undefeated in 2011. Un- defeated in 2011 until Southern California football proved it’s supremacy, as the Warriors quickly showed their dominance marching down the field scoring with relative ease. The Chargers’ head coach was ejected after making inappropriate comments and their coaching staff warned of any more outbursts. While their coaching staff BARELY kept themselves out of trouble, their parents/supporters could not. After the second touchdown by the Warriors, the Chargers once again went 3 and out and our “Black” offense went to work. As they drove down the field and prepared to score, their fans began to make threats towards the referees and that forced the end of the game. The Chargers basically quit after being taken apart by the Warriors. Final score 14-0. (continued)
  • 5. (Continued from page 4) The Warriors were awarded the *Silver Trophy, but were verbally named the Champions as they had proved their point against a 13 year old team, pushing them into only the 3rd ever Double Over Time game in tournament his- tory. There is no doubt in anyone’s mind that they would have demolished ANY 12 year old team who would have been unlucky enough to draw them on their schedule, just ask the Chargers...GOLD! The final game of the tournament was played by the Indians on Saturday evening at 5:00, the evening was chilly, but nowhere near as cold as Thanksgiving night. The Indians however, were on fire! Seemingly firing on all cylin- ders, they destroyed the Las Vegas Saints in every aspect of the game. Coach Leo Briones’ defense was stout and did not allow the Saints to come near the end zone all night. Defensive lineman Jesus “Chuchin” Castro was in the opposition backfield all night disrupting almost every play. When Castro wasn’t there, Eduardo Luis or Joshua Delgadillo were there to fill the gaps. No matter what they tried, the Indians’ defenders were there to foil their at- tempts. On the other side of the ball, Offensive Coordinator Cesar Bermejo was methodical in dissecting the Saints’ de- fense, making every drive count and basically scoring at will. With QB Matt Valencia guiding the offense and RB’s Abiel Aguilar, Matthew Barba, Raoul Luis and Matt Escalera providing the “ground and pound,” the Saints didn’t stand a chance. The Indians would win the game by the score of 27-0 and also be crowned Champions! When looking back at the Sacramento game, had they not allowed the one long run and the kickoff return, the In- dians would have been the 7th team in tournament history to leave without being scored upon, just like the Scouts. In any case, they did great! It is completely understood that Thanksgiving is a Holiday to be spent with family, breaking bread and sitting down and being thankful for the things we have and all that God’s Blessings brings us. Many feel that going to a place like Las Vegas to play in a football tournament takes away from that and for those who feel that way, I’m sure it does. But once you’ve shared the experience of a tournament that allows you to see opponents you’ve never seen before and may never see again, I believe you will change your mind. Once you’ve been a part of the mass of people who have come together for ONE reason and that’s to watch our kids play not just as a team, but as a “family,” a brother/sisterhood, it’s an amazing feeling of unity. I can’t think of a better way to give Thanks, than to see our children making use of the abilities they been Blessed with, as many wished they could. As former Indians’ coach Robert “Spooner” Witherspoon always said; “this sport isn’t for all kids, it’s only for the special ones, because you have to be special to play this game.” It is an incredible feeling, standing or sitting on the sideline along with roughly 150-200 “Indians’ Family Mem- bers,” cheering on our kids who are out there proudly representing the City of Montebello and the Indians organi- zation. Our parents, friends and supporters outnumbered ALL other cities/organizations in attendance in Las Ve- gas. It was an awesome feeling walking from one field to another, from one game to another and seeing the “Sea of Green” that engulfed All-American Park from Thursday thru Saturday! On Thanksgiving weekend 2011, All-American Park in Las Vegas, Nevada was transformed into Grant Rea Park! OUR HOUSE! On behalf of the Montebello Indians Family, I thank all who made the trip and hope to see our numbers grow in the years to come. Becoming stronger and continuing to build a better program for those who are part of or join the Indians’ Family I the future. Also, thanks to those who could not make the trip, but made donations, gave of their time or had the confidence and trust to allow their children to accompany their team in order to accomplish their goals...and accomplish them they did! It’s looking like the teams are now going to attend the “Best of the West” Tournament in Chino on December 10th-11th, please come out and support them. Good luck to all!
