Neurons have dendrites that receive signals and an axon that sends signals to other neurons. The myelin sheath surrounds some axons and speeds up signal transmission by insulating the axon. Thinner myelin sheaths result in slower signal transmission along the neuron.

5. Myelin Sheath The main purpose of a myelin layer (or sheath) is an increase in the speed at which impulses are carried along the myelinated fiber. The smaller the myelin sheath the slower the messages are sent along the neuron.
