Striped Icebergs
- 2. Icebergs in the Antarctic area sometimes have stripes, formed by layers of snow that react to different conditions.
- 3. Blue stripes are often created when sea water freezes so quickly in a crevice in the ice sheet that no bubbles form.
- 4. A green stripe forms when an iceberg falls into algae-rich sea and a layer of water freezes to the underside.
- 5. Brown, black and yellow lines are caused by sediment, picked up when the ice sheet grinds downhill towards the sea.
