- Fyne Futures Re-Cycling“2012/2013 was a busy year for the re-cycling team. There was a slight downturn in tonnage but we still had a healthy outcome of 373 tonnes. We are aiming to increase tonnage by improving customer participation by the end of the year. Markets are still very much erratic but improving slightly. Due to the funding streams that we have acquired, we have been able to employ 3 new members of staff, one member of staff finding full time work during this process! As they approach the end of their placements we have now taken on another two driver/operators who will be with us till November. We will be sorry to loose David and George, who have made an immense difference to our workplace! We have secured a years contract through A&B council for Neil. Our vehicles are very problematic. We have had significant unexpected maintenance costs which have had an impact on our budget. We are starting to change the way we do our sorting at the present by getting the milk bottles baled separately so we can get maximum payment for them. This is still in the early stages but should make a difference. We are continuing to review ways and means of changing what we do for best results.” – Anne ShawFollowing on from most recent talks with Argyll & Bute Council, there is a willingness to agree a five year contract which would include helping us secure investment in new vehicle and also additional yard space so we may pursue a strategy of growing our materials recovery facility. The targets set are to achieve 90% participation rates of occupied households; +45% landfill diversion of total arisings by 2018. We are already working on ideas generated by the recycling team to put together a programme of activities to build participation in this financial as a platform for next year when we will be 100% Bute. We are looking at ways in which we can add value to our bales before they go to market, part of this is the milk bottle pilot – we will also be visiting Lowmac, Traceys and a number of other routes to market to understand their business and learn from the next level up in the supply chain. Discussions with Zero Waste Scotland have been frustrating because funding pots we were preparing to apply to have been restructured and are no longer available however it has been indicated that if we can demonstrate a clear growth strategy in materials recovery this would be looked upon favourably. Our big challenge this year is to grow participation rates and tonnage on Bute.
- RE-USE“There has been some changes in the Re-use recently due to unforeseen circumstances , as we have had to close the Old School Hall that we where using as our store to the public and this has had a knock on effect on sales .We have refurbished our shop in Deanhood Place inside and out by painting the inside walls and the outside also ,we also done a repair of the roof by re-felting due to the water that was getting in to the shop whereby damaging the stock in the shop .We have now restocked the shop and it seems to be doing well ,we will rotate the stock on a regular basis from our store . All going well we are hoping to secure new premises to be used as a shop and store together , so lets hope we can sort something out and get our furniture sales back up again.” – James CrichtonCaroline Spiers supported with our people in communities placement Marion, will have responsibility for Re-use. We have registered for Revolve accreditation which is a natio.nalscheme for Reuse, as part of the programme Caroline and Marion will receive training in retail sales, merchandising and customer service. We will have clear policies guiding our sales and service and crucially consistent pricing strategies. We are averaging around £200 per week at Deanhood which is almost double what it was doing before the refurb and new stocking policy. However this is around £400 per week short on what was being achieved with the school gym open. It is hoped that once the old school has been secured we can re-open the gym to the public until such times as alternative premises are secured. HIE have completed the tender process and appointed a surveyor. Argyle Street will be getting surveyed tomorrow. Once we have the surveyors report this will inform the investment and funding strategy. Our big challenge this year is to realise the full potential of re-use as quickly as we can.
- Car Bute“During the last the financial year, the three Car Bute cars travelled 26412 miles, covering 361 trips and generating an income of £12368.12To date we have 74 members, and the indication is that this year should see a marked increase in usage by the visitor market.We continue to drive membership and promoting the use of the car club in helping to reduce the carbon footprint, last year 523.968 tonnes were saved by members giving up their cars and joining the community car club.” – Caroline Speirs We have secured £18,000 funding from Carplus to support the car club over the next financial year, and continue to draw from LEADER funding gained last year. Argyll & Bute Council have renewed their membership which is great news, with Social Work growing their usage and dialogue continues with NHS.With IT support we will be able to sign up new members at Deanhood Place – giving us a wonderful opportunity to grow the visitor market as a portion of our income.Car Bute is performing to business plan – growth is in line with financial forecast and membership forecast. The next step in the plan was to add another part time member of staff around July of this year. As a result of changes to the organisation it will be possible to operate the car club from Re-style shop and therefore use our people resources very effectively to deliver sales across the different parts of the business. As Marion is 100% funded, it will allow us to grow the business without the additional salary expense. We can review staffing in the second half of the year. Our big challenge this year is to increase visitor use over the summer months.
- Bute Produce“Over the last year we have had many obstacles in our way regarding the weather, and woodpigeons were problematic with eating the plants! We resolved this by covering the crops with nets. We have put raised beds into the Polly tunnels to try and grow more produce inside, which has proven successful so far! We have also had a few open days that were very successful and the green box delivery scheme is continuing to revive its numbers. We are now registered as a Met Office weather recording station. I am adopting responsibility for Horticultural Co-ordinator duties. We are continuing to improve every day with the garden!” – Ronnie ArmstrongWe have been unsuccessful in securing Skills for Future funding, with only 1 in 4 projects being supported we were up against a tremendous amount of competition for this one off fund. I was given immediate feedback that the project had a great deal of merit and that other heritage lottery funding may be investigated. I have a fuller feedback call tomorrow to discuss what next steps might look like. We hope to hear about People in Communities which is one of the contingency plans. Securing investment that will allow Bute Produce to deliver training and health outcomes until end of site lease 2018 remains a work in progress. Mount Stuart launched Eat Bute from the garden on Friday. They are interested in sharing knowledge with their own garden and are looking for opportunities for us to work closer together. They are also interested in the progression of the training centre as this was a corner stone of the MeikleKilmory project. We have 5 trainees signed up for Introduction to Horticulture and expect to have achieved the target of 8 by the end of June.Rothesay Academy will be linking with Bute Produce building sessions at our weather station into the curriculum for excellence with S2 – 4 science students.Green box customers are making a steady growth. We are taking feedback on a weekly basis from customers and as a result we are going to trial a smaller pack size. We will use American style grocery bags to offer customers a £5.50 selection. Customers will be able to order on line and collect at the garden or potentially at Deanhood Place. Discussions with NHS are ongoing with regards to a green prescription, and health visitors are keen for us to revisit the idea of a stall at the health centre during clinics. Our big challenge this year is to improve profitability through training provision.
- Towards Zero Carbon Bute“The “Hard to Treat” part of the project continues to distribute the low cost/no cost tool kits and energy monitors. KH attended the IEE Promise Conference for Europe’s Islands which seeks to promote energy savings and awareness among households situated on some of Europe's islands. Scottish islands - Bute, Mull & Lewis others represented were Lanzarote, Cyprus, Bornholm & Aeroe (Denmark), Saaremaa, (Estonia), Madeira, Sardina, Syros & Paxi (Greece). Bute has the opportunity to become an ”island buddy” which at the moment doesnt include funding, but could in the future. At the moment it is on an information sharing basis, website space, help from ”mentor” islands such as Samso & Iceland which is still a useful exercise.The Green Deal/Energy Company Obligation/Home Energy Efficiency Programme - Awareness raising meetings with local RSL’s, private landlords and homeowners. Working closely with Fyne Homes, Rothesay Townscape Heritage Initiative and private landlords to put together bids for ECO funding for hard to treat properties. Initial property surveys, include heating types/type of solid walls/glazing and energy costs. Diploma in Domestic Green Deal Advice awarded in March.Establishing an Energy Efficiency Forum for Argyll & Bute in conjunction with Energy Savings Trust, Argyll & Bute Council, AliEnergy plus other CCF and community groups in Argyll & Bute.” – Karen HiltonClimate Challenge Fund have approved a change request to bring underspend of over £12k into the new year. The additional funds will be used to buy a thermal imaging camera which will be a useful asset, the publication of a Green Directory for householders which will promote all aspects of Fyne Futures and will include information on other local services and businesses. We will also tender for a consultant to complete an evaluation of TZCB and Bute with 2014 being 5th anniversary of the project and produce a report of achievements. The publication of these two documents will raise profile of Fyne Futures and Bute and will also be used to gain funding post March 2014.The SUSTRANS bid for a cycleway at Port Bannatyne has not made the cut in the first round however it has been put onto the maybe pile, meanwhile we are progressing the project by exploring other options such as 2014 commonwealth games legacy fund which supports community projects focussed on sport, health and fitness. All three primary schools are engaging with Bike to School Week mid June, and Rothesay Academy S2 pupils will be undertaking an energy efficiency project calculating their own carbon footprint and coming up with ideas to reduce their personnel energy use. We look forward to gratitude from parents.Our big challenge this year is to deliver CCF CO2e reductions and deliver a plan that retains 1.9 FTE in the business post March 2014.
- Bio-Diesel“11,700 ltrs produced, of which 4,250 ltrs were sold to Kibble, Fyne Homes, Car Bute etc.Current production averaging 750 ltrs per month.Fresh oil; 4,500 ltrs sold to 7 regular customers. Current sales quite buoyant, especially as we are coming into peak season.” – Fraser Crawford I have looked into whether we could tap into the 5p island discount. The scheme is only available to registered retailers and works on a rebate system from wholesale suppliers. As we do not buy from a wholesaler, to gain the rebate would involved a very complicated registration process. Instead we will be sending a proposal to external customers such as Kibble and Fyne Homes that we will track pump price and offer bio-diesel at 5p below inclusive of VAT. Currently Fyne Homes would find diesel at lowest 141.0p and highest 142.9p. We can offer them 5p below lowest price inclusive of VAT. This means total price of £1.36 – VAT cost £0.2266 - £1.1334 – fuel duty £0.5795 – profit £0.5539 (before costs to produce are removed). Fyne Futures retains sustainable volumes and Fyne Homes reduces their fuel costs.We have begun working through the RTFO process, the next step is for Scott Moncrieff to verify our information, we then need to gain the vouchers for auction. The good news is we are able to claim for last years volume which, if consultant report is correct, should help us regain £2340. Fraser has yet to venture into Cowal but that is planned within the next month. He will also be attending a bio-fuel conference taking place at Inverary.Rothesay Academy S4 chemistry students will be visiting bio-diesel for a presentation and demonstration as part of their course work, in mid-June.Our big challenge this year is to deliver a break even budget.
