2. The Bottlenose Dolphin is one species of small cetacean most well known for interacting with humans.
These creatures have large brains, with a brain to body mass higher than most other animals. They
will allow humans to play with them and even to ride them. However, they are still wild animals and
their behavior can be unpredictable. An incident at Garden Eel Cove, off the Kona coast in Hawaii on
13 January 2013 is an example of an amazing interaction between divers and a Bottlenose Dolphin.
3. Kona Manta Ray Dive
Kaulua-Kona on the west coast of Hawaii is
famous for its Manta Ray population. They
appear at night to feed on plankton.
Professional divers had taken some
snorkelers and divers out for a night dive to
see the Manta Rays feeding. Powerful lights
were used to attract the Manta Rays and they
illuminated the whole area. While they were
watching the Rays, a wild Bottlenose Dolphin
showed up in the lighted area and from its
restricted movement they could tell that it had
a problem. Read more.
