Hookah pipes have been used for hundreds of years in coffee shops and restaurants in Turkey and the Middle East. While their use began spreading in the 17th century, glass hookah pipes did not become widely popular in America and Europe until around 50 years ago. Today, the romantic experience of socializing with friends over hookah with billowing smoke, food, drinks and conversation on a Friday night remains an integral part of the hookah culture. Various terms like water pipe, glass pipe or narghile all refer to the same experience of relaxing with the bubbling sound of hookah.
