2. HONORING GOD
Main verse: 1 Samuel 2:30: for them that honour me I will honour,
Honor: As a noun, honor in the Bible means “esteem, value, or great respect.”
As believers we need to cultivate the habit of honoring God in all our ways.
DO WE ESTEEM HIM HIGH? Do we greatly respect and value His precepts.
One thing is sure when we honor Him, He will honor us.
3. THE PRINCIPLE OF HONOR
Wherever we see honoring the Lord in the scriptures , it mostly has the theme of GIVING, GLORIFYING,
EXALTING and our standards when we come to the Lord.
Genesis 3:17- The first sin was due to an error in giving honor. The Man heard the woman and forgot the
precepts of God. Sin starts in dishonor. You make an error in choices and fall into great danger.
Look at Moses- He did not honor God and it resulted him in not going to the promised land.
“But the LORD said to Moses and Aaron, "Because you did not trust in me enough to honor me as holy
in the sight of the Israelites, you will not bring this community into the land I give them.”(Numbers
20:12)
Cain and Abel- Abel honored God more and He was blessed.
So your Christian life and progress depends on the honor you give to God.
4. WAYS WE HONOR GOD - IN GIVING
By Giving our best. “A son honoureth his father, and a servant his master:if then I be a father, where is
mine honour?”(Mal 1:6)
Verse 8 says the priests were offering blind animals for sacrifice. We should offer best and honorable
sacrifices to God. You revere God in your giving standards. Don’t offer half heartedly. Give cheerfully.
God loves a cheerful giver.
HONOR GOD by GIVING firstfruits of all thine increase. GIVING THE FIRST
“Honour the Lord with thy substance, and with the firstfruits of all thine increase:So shall thy barns be
filled with plenty, and thy presses shall burst out with new wine.”(Proverbs 3:9-10)
5. IN LIVING
“Do you not know that your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have
received from God? You are not your own; you were bought at a price. Therefore honor God with your
bodies.”( 1 Cor 6:19-20)
Our body is not our own. You can’t live the way you want. For a Christian the ownership has changed.
Your body should reflect WHOSE you are.
1 Cor 6:14- God will raise our bodies so we should maintain that honor and dignity.
We are united with the Lord in our Body and Spirit and we should bring honor to His name. Anything
that profanes the name of the Lord should not be entertained and we should not be a part of it.
2 Tim 2:20
6. IN SERVING
We should have a mentality to serve the Lord. Service cannot happen without love. Serving the Lord in
and through the church should be our passion and commitment.
“He that loveth his life shall lose it; and he that hateth his life in this world shall keep it unto life eternal. If
any man serve me, let him follow me; and where I am, there shall also my servant be: if any man serve
me, him will my Father honour.”(John 12:25-26) We all want all comfort to enjoy in this world. We want
to feel comfortable always. Remember we should die to ourselves. (V 23) A grain of wheat should fall to
the earth and die….Only if you die to yourself can the Lord multiply you.
The Father will honor those who serve the Lord Jesus.
“Because he hath set his love upon me, therefore will I deliver him: I will set him on high, because he
hath known my name.He shall call upon me, and I will answer him:I will be with him in trouble;I will
deliver him, and honour him. With long life will I satisfy him,and shew him my salvation.”(Psalm 91:14-16)
Serving in love….
ROMANS 12:10-11- Be devoted to one another in love. Honor one another above yourselves. Never be
lacking in zeal, but keep your spiritual fervor, serving the Lord.
7. IN PRAISING
“He who offers a sacrifice of thanksgiving honors Me; And to him who orders his way aright I shall show
the salvation of God”(Psalm 50:23)
We should learn to honor God by praising Him and giving glory to His name.
“Through Jesus, therefore, let us continually offer to God a sacrifice of praise—the fruit of lips that
openly profess his name.”(Heb 13:15)
“Lord, I have loved the habitation of thy house, and the place where thine honour dwelleth.”(Psalm 26:8)
You should love your local church and make it a better place of honor. Its there He comes to bless you.
“Make an altar of earth for me and sacrifice on it your burnt offerings and fellowship offerings, your
sheep and goats and your cattle. Wherever I cause my name to be honored, I will come to you and bless
you.”(Exodus 20:24)
