2. 2
Once upon a time, Buddha was sitting with his disciples.
One of them asked him, “Lord, what is Kamma?”
Buddha said, “Let me tell you a story. After that, you will
understand Kamma very well.”
Then Buddha started telling a story to his disciples.
。
3. 3
The story went like this: “Once a king was touring his
kingdom on his elephant. Suddenly he stopped in front of a
shop in the market and said to his minister, “I don't know
why but I want to hang the owner of this shop.”
The minister was shocked but before he could ask the king
why, the king had moved on.
4. 4
The next day, the minister went to that shop dressed
as one of the local people to see the shopkeeper. He casually asked
him how his business was doing. The shopkeeper who
was a sandalwood merchant replied sadly, “I hardly have any
customers. People would come to my shop, smell the
sandalwood and then go away.”
5. 5
They would even grade the sandalwood's quality but only a
few people would buy anything.” The merchant then
continued, “My only hope is that the king of this kingdom
would die soon. Then there would be a massive demand for
sandalwood to perform the last rites for the king.”
6. 6
The merchant said that as he was the only sandalwood merchant
in town, he was sure that his business would continue to do well
after the death of the king.
The minister then understood why the king had stopped in
front of this shop and expressed a desire to kill the shopkeeper.
7. 7
Perhaps the shopkeeper's negative thoughts
resonated with the king who had in return felt the same
kind of negative thoughts arising within him.
The minister was a very wise man. He pondered on the
matter for a while. After that he did not reveal who he was
because of what had happened the day before.
DEAD!

8. 8
The minister then expressed a desire to buy some
sandalwood. The shopkeeper was pleased to hear this.
He handed some sandalwood over to the minister.
When the minister returned to the palace, he went straight
to the court where the king was seated and reported that the
sandalwood merchant had sent a gift for his majesty the king.
9. 9
The king was surprised when he opened the package.
He was pleasantly surprised by the subtle golden color
of the sandalwood and its lovely fragrance. The King
was extremely happy. He sent some gold coins to the
sandalwood merchant.
10. 10
The king also felt sorry in his heart that he had harbored
the unpleasant thought of killing the shopkeeper.
When the shopkeeper received the gold coins from the
king, he was astonished. He began to express his
gratitude to the king and started praising him. He said the
gold coins saved him from the brink of poverty.
11. 11
He pondered over the negative thoughts he had towards the
king and his positive thinking and gratitude to the king.
After telling the story to his disciples, Buddha taught them
about the workings of Kamma. Buddha said that Kamma is
intentional action arising from the mind and manifesting out in
the mind, speech and body.
12. 12
If we have good and kind thoughts for another person,
positive thoughts will come back to us in a good way
but if we harbor evil thoughts toward others those
thoughts will return to us as retribution.
Your intentional thoughts, good or bad are your karma.
Reflective comments from the writer of the story

In our lives, what you give to others will come back to you.
If you think negatively about someone that person
will also start having bad thoughts about you. If you think
positively about someone, you'll start to have good things
arising in your mind. This is a natural law …
of action and reaction.

Good begets good, bad begets bad. You reap what you sow.
What goes around comes around.
Never have negative thoughts like anger, ill-will and hatred towards

Karma will take its just course of action.

Mind precedes all mental states. Mind is
their chief; they are all mind-wrought.
If with an impure mind a person speaks or
acts suffering follows him like the wheel
