1. Fire crew rescue drowning terrier.
A dog was saved from drowning by fire-fighters.
Gregor, a 13-year-old Airedale Terrier, was pulled from the swollen Wear near the Victoria Viaduct,
in Fatfield, Washington, by fire crews.
The pet went into the river while out walking with owner, Cathy Robertson, while she visited her
family in Washington.
Mrs Robertson, who was staying with her mother Olive Harrison, in Washington Village, was
walking along the Wear on Thursday at about 5.30pm with her brother David, when Gregor
vanished.
She added: "My brother was in front of me and Gregor went out of sight.
"I heard splashing below us and I just thought we'd lost him. I thought there was no way back for
Gregor from there."
Mr Harrison rang for the fire brigade and a crew from Washington Station managed to rescue the
dog from the river, using a ladder and harness.
