2. A development bank opens up new, exciting markets
The challenge
Finding common
ground
Positive outcome
Record-low interest rates, growing market uncertainty and volatility have made it a challenge for
insurers and pension funds to realize the returns they need to meet their future liabilities. Stricter
regulatory requirements and growing public attention for responsible investing are putting additional
demands on these institutions. To meet these challenges a development bank wanted to explore
new possibilities. NN Investment Partners (NN IP) offered to explore these in partnership.
The bank could draw on its extensive investment experience gained in the private sector in
developing countries and emerging markets, over almost half a century. Also the highly
commendable business goal of the bank – to empower entrepreneurs in developing countries to
improve local conditions – caught our attention. In lengthy talks on all organizational levels we found
much common ground in ideas and goals. These talks led to the development of a new emerging
markets loans product. NN IP agreed to participate in new loans arranged by the bank, with a
long-term view and a “buy-and-hold” philosophy, thereby building up a diversified portfolio of loans
in emerging markets and creating an interesting product for investors. The product targets loans
linked to financial institutions, energy, agribusiness and telecommunications; sectors where the
development bank has ample experience and where it sees the most promise for improvement in
developing nations.
The bank has acquired efficient access to an attractive illiquid asset class, which has traditionally
had high barriers to entry. In addition, this partnership also provides the client access to an
important group of large-scale, long-term investors who are eager to contribute to sustainable
economic development in emerging countries. The bank’s resources for carrying out its mission,
have been significantly strengthened.
