Rosa chinensis is the common name for a deciduous shrub in the Rose family of flowering plants. The
plant is mostly found in southwest China, primarily in the provinces of Guizhou, Hubei, and Sichuan.
Many rosa chinensis varieties are grown in gardens and are popular due to their bright, red or pink
flowers.
Rosa Chinensis: Quick facts
Botanical name Rosa chinensis
Common name China rose (Chinese rose) or Bengal rose
Family Rosaceae
Found in Southwest China
Flower Red or pink flowers
Flowering season Summer (April to September)
Foliage Pinnately divided, glossy and dark green leaves
Benefits Used as an ornamental plant or a kitchen herb
 In hedges or thickets, the shrub can reach a height of 2 metres.
 The plant has pinnate leaves that are alternately arranged and have three or five leaflets.
 Rosa chinensis flowers are hermaphrodite and usually appear in groups of four or five. The
flowers of wild plant varieties have five pink to red petals.
 The plant is also used as a kitchen herb in cooking.
 Rosa chinensis has been widely cultivated as an ornamental plant, and some cultivars are known
as China roses.
The advantages of Rosa chinensis
Medicinal applications
The flowers of the China rose, as well as the plant's leaves and roots, are used for medicinal purposes.
The flower buds improve blood circulation and relieve stomach pains and swellings. The leaves, fruits,
and roots of the plants are used to treat conditions such as arthritis, boils, and coughs. Vitamin E is
found in the seeds.
Cooking
The plant's flower buds, flowers, and shoot tips are eaten as herbs or served in soups. The fruit can be
eaten raw or cooked. However, the seeds are surrounded by only a thin layer of flesh. To avoid irritation
in the mouth and digestive tract, seed hair must be removed before eating the fruit. The seeds are
ground and mixed with flour or used as a supplement in other foods.
Decorative purposes
The plant produces semi-double or double red, pink, white, or purple flowers. Gardeners like this plant
because of its beautiful flowers and pleasant fragrance. As a result, the China rose plant is widely used in
landscaping as an ornamental garden plant.
Rosa chinensis cultivars
 Chinensis: This cultivar has red petals and originated in cultivation.
 Spontanea: One of the rosa chinensis varieties with red petals. It is indigenous to China's
Guizhou, Hubei, and Sichuan provinces.
 Semperflorens (Curtis) Koehne: Dark red or purple petals characterise this cultivar of Rosa
chinensis.
For many years, numerous rosa chinensis varieties have been cultivated in China. As a result, there may
not be significant differences between wild and cultivated varieties of the plant. Rosa chinensis was used
to create some garden rose varieties.
Rosa odorata is created by crossing Rosa chinensis varieties with Rosa gigantea, another rose species.
Through further hybridisation, they produce tea roses and hybrid tea roses.
Rosa chinensis treatment
Sunlight
During the growing season, the China rose plant requires at least six hours of direct sunlight per day. In
partial shade, the plant only grows leaves and does not bloom. In the summer, however, avoid
overexposure to sunlight.
Soil
Soil The plant grows in a variety of soil types. It grows best in well-drained, fertile, acidic soil. It can grow
in heavy clay and moist soil as well. To avoid water accumulation, place the plant on a higher terrain.
Propagation
Rose seed may take two years to germinate, owing to the plant's need for warmer weather following a
cold spell to mature the embryo and reduce the seedcoat.
Water
Plant growth thrives in moist soil conditions. However, avoid waterlogged conditions to prevent root
rot. Watering should be done only when the topsoil becomes slightly dry, whether the plant is grown in
the ground or in containers. There is no set watering schedule for the plant.
The number of flowers will be reduced due to the drought. As a result, water the plant every two to
three days.
Pruning
The plant must be pruned on a regular basis. You can prune the plant's faded flowers and thin,
overlapping branches. Pruning after flowering and before winter helps the plant save nutrients and grow
with concentrated nutrition.
Keep the main vine branches about two or three metres long and cut off the rest. In the case of bush
plants, prune the plant up to one-third of its original height and leave four or six thicker branches to
ensure the plant's shape matches your preference.
How do you cultivate Rosa chinensis?
Use humus-rich, moderately acidic sandy soil when growing Rosa chinensis in a pot. When planting,
loosen the soil and apply organic fertiliser as a base fertiliser. You can cover the soil surface with organic
mulch to retain heat, preserve roots, and prevent weed growth.
Avoid transplanting China roses from one location to another during the winter months. Check that the
area is well-lit and ventilated. It may otherwise attract pests and diseases.
