Mentoring Process
• Grading does tend to motivate the learner, and
is useful to determine the trainee's readiness to
begin his/her real work as a mentor.
3. Suggestions for “Grading”
• In the online environment, evaluation of the
mentee’s progress can be accomplished via self-
assessments, instructor review, or peer review (if
more than one learner is participating).
• Grading should be according to effort in relation
to the training goals or outcomes. For example, if
critical thinking is one of the learning outcomes of
the course, then any critical thinking statements
that appear in the blogs, Q&A sessions, or Role
Plays should be valued. If self-reflection is key to
the process, then that should be valued in the
grading, and so on.
