What is my role in the C4C District Team or other participation
Why do I care?
This is initiative is a joint effort of both conferences of the UMC.
C4C has been initiated in order to help the church and community reach and support children within their own communities who are in need.
This initiative is being supported by both conferences and The Duke Endowment
The purpose is 2 fold:
to develop new church and school partnerships or to strengthen existing partnerships that are focused on the children who need the support the most.
2. To develop community wide collaboration with communities of faith , school administration, and other organizations in order to provide an organized, unified, non duplicative avenue to support the children who need the support the most.
C4C has four focus areas :
Helping the faith community and the community at large better understand poverty and the role it plays in our communities. It is our hope to help children and in the process we will grow the most! Once we begin to better understand poverty the natural reaction will be to respond through works and policy efforts.
For the children the first thing we need to do is to make sure the basic needs of children are provided. It is hard to focus when you are hungry or have an abscessed tooth. All children need proper nutrition, medical and dental care, clothing, school supplies and their basic needs met.
Reading on grade level by 3rd grade is imperative! Children who are not reading on grade level by 3rd grade are more likely to drop out of school later. 75% of prison inmates are high school dropouts. Giving up an hour a week to read with a child or small group of children makes a big difference.
Summer is the most difficult time for many of our communities children and families in need. No school breakfast and lunch, often left alone with limited or no resources for enrichment activities, no reading material in the home. Children need us in the summer. This is an avenue to reach out and bring the children and families into the church by offering summer feeding programs, summer programming and reading programs, and also supporting our school programs by providing summer reading buddies for summer reading camps.
