I agree with you somewhat but the reality is simple: You're missing out. Unless you're strapped for
cash and/or really see a car as a transportation appliance, it's going to become quite obvious you're
missing out sticking to that philosophy. Getting the cheapest car on the lot may be wise
economically, but you're also likely getting the worst car on the lot. It's less safe, less refined, less
comfortable, etc. I'm not saying they're bad cars, but most people can tell the difference in quality
and refinement even from a compact car to a midsize within the same brand. I sure can.
Also, hybrids have been around for about 15 years now. That's hardly new technology. The Prius is
in its 3rd generation and about to debut the 4th. Also, it's not only new technology that runs into
problems. All car makers have recalls and they are often for things not even related to cutting-edge
technology as the GM and Takata recalls have exemplified.
Also, while there are considerable drawbacks to owning a car like the Tesla Model S, consider that
these cars have the #1 highest customer satisfaction rating out there. If they were problematic cars
that frequently inconvenienced their owners, such a high rating wouldn't be possible. Not only that,
early adopters of technology allow companies to further R&D and then release products that are
more affordable. It's the current Model S owners that are largely to thank when the Model 3 comes
out in a few years. Without them, Tesla wouldn't have bothered making it.
While I do have an appreciation for tried and true technology, it's not exactly innovative to cling onto
something from decades ago and reject everything else that's new. Today's technologies are
allowing vehicles to be more efficient and run cleaner while also outputting more power. Some
people appreciate this and will get on board with it to help pave the way for others.
