The History Of Game Shows
Milly Andrews – Carlo
The first ever game show was called The Spelling Bee, it
was broadcasted on television in 1938 31st May at 10pm.
The show was only 15 minutes long, and it was on the
radio and television in the United Kingdom. The show
was hosted by Freddie Grisewood, but only 4 episodes
were actually produced onto television. On the show,
contestants competed against well known television
stars of the era, and a one off Spelling Bee for children
was aired on the 25th November 1937.
The first ever game show
After the Spelling Bee, Truth or Consequences was the first
game show to air on commercially licensed television, the
first episode aired in 1941. After these two shows were
brought about, game shows started becoming more popular
everyday. The game shows on at daytime were targeted for
stay at home housewives so they would become more
popular and more frequently watched. However, even
though most game shows were very popular, quiz shows lost
their popularity very quickly and panel shows had an increase
in popularity.
1930’s – 1950’s
Game shows remained popular through the 60’s, one of
the popular shows was called Jeopardy, and a show
named The Match Game aired in 1962. Colour television
was then introduced in the late 1960s early 1970s which
meant game shows became more updated and the
existing game shows became even more popular and
liked as they were moved to major networks.
1960’s – 1970’s
Many game shows lost their permanent place in the
daytime line-up because fewer hits were produced. The
network tried to bring back a lot of the game shows
they soon got cancelled again due to not enough
viewers. However two game shows remained highly
successful which were Wheel of Fortune and Jeopardy,
they are still popular to this day.
1980’s – 1990’s
In the US, CBS is currently the only major network airing
daily national game shows, it still airs The Price Is Right
and Lets Make A Deal which first aired in 2009. Four
classic game shows have been brought back which are,
To Tell The Truth, The $100,000 Pyramid, Celebrity
Family Feud and Match Game. Game shows are still
popular around the world today, many now have
celebrities starring on them to make them more
interesting and popular.
