4. ABOUT THE Savanna
The Savanna is a UNIQUE and DIVERSE ecosystem found in various
parts of the world. In this presentation, I will try to explain the key
abiotic and biotic factors of the Savanna, including specific-enough
details about the animals, plants, soil, nutrients, temperature, and
precipitation that make this ecosystem so very good
6. Africa
They cover a significant portion
of the continent, including
countries like Kenya, Tanzania,
South Africa, Botswana, and
Nigeria.
Australia
Found in the northern parts
of the country, including the
northern territory and
Queensland.
Asia
Less common in but can be
found in some regions, such
as parts of India, Indonesia,
and the Philippines.
No love for Antartica :D
South America
Found in countries like
Brazil, Venezuela, and
Colombia. The Brazilian
savanna, known as the
Cerrado, is one of the
largest savanna regions in
the world.
8. Soil and Dirt
The soil in the Savanna is often
sandy and porous, allowing for
efficient drainage. It is low in
nutrients, which can be a
limiting factor for plant growth.
The acidity of the soil varies,
but it generally tends to be
slightly acidic (ummm… actually
its also called Alfisols and
Ultisols)
9. Temperature
The Savanna experiences a wide range of
temperatures throughout the year.
During the dry season, temperatures can
soar to as high as 100°F (37.8°C), while in
the wet season, they can drop to around
68°F (20°C). This temperature variation
has a significant impact on the
ecosystem.
10. Precipitation
Precipitation in the Savanna is
characterized by distinct wet
and dry seasons. During the
wet season, which can last for
several months, the region
receives moderate to heavy
rainfall. In contrast, the dry
season is marked by little to no
rainfall, creating a challenging
environment for both plants
and animals *(76.2-101.6 cm)
12. Typical Animals
Lions
As apex predators, lions play a
critical role in maintaining the
balance of the ecosystem by
controlling herbivore
populations.
Giraffes
These tall herbivores are
well-suited to reach leaves
high in the trees, making
them a unique feature of
the Savanna.
13. These iconic trees provide
food and shelter for many
animals, including giraffes
and elephants (but ugliest
in Minecraft)
Typical Plants
Acacia trees Grasses
Grasses are a dominant
plant type in the Savanna
and serve as a primary
food source for herbivores.
Baobab Tree
Known as the "Tree of Life,"
baobabs store water in
their massive trunks and
provide sustenance for
various animals during
droughts (THICCCC Tree
Trunks)
14. But Nutrients are abiotic why are you putting them here
Michael??
● Due to the nutrient-poor soil, plants in the Savanna
have adapted various strategies to thrive. Some
plants have deep roots to access water and
nutrients, while others form symbiotic relationships
with fungi to enhance nutrient uptake.
Nutrients
16. The Savanna has an unique soil composition, temperature fluctuations,
and distinct wet and dry seasons create a challenging yet thriving
environment for a diverse array of animals and plants. From big elephants
to iconic acacia trees, the Savanna's biodiversity is a testament to nature's
adaptability. Understanding and conserving these factors are essential for
preserving this remarkable ecosystem, ensuring its continued existence
for generations to come.
