20. Nous sommes uniques.
Notre approche est multidisciplinaire.
Nos visées sont internationales.
Nous façonnons la science.
Mandate, mission and vision is inclusive of men, women, girls and boys – and the unique and intertwining factors that shape their health. Cross-cuts all health research themes and topics.

What we know:
Traditional methodological approaches in health research have been directed at controlling for extraneous factors and minimizing heterogeneity
Methodological innovation is required for gender, sex and health research to advance.
What we need:
Innovative ways to consider the causal mechanisms that explain differences and similarities in health outcomes among men, women, girls and boys.
To move beyond binary measures of sex and gender towards advancing research that interrogates heterogeneity.
Multidisciplinary and international collaborations across the full spectrum of health research
To not only build on what is known but also to consider what has not been explored in relation to gender, sex and health
The solution:
We will transform processes within our research approaches (from the theoretical and conceptual frames we bring to our work, to the methods and measures we use, and the people we collaborate with in the process) to enable researchers to answer the challenging questions that arise from the complex health issues currently facing men, women, girls and boys.
Linkage to Roadmap:
Innovation is a key value of CIHR and identified in Roadmap as a critical factor in achieving world-class research excellence
The addition of sex and gender considerations can be particularly advantageous in areas of science and technology that have previously ignored sex and gender variation (e.g. Dr. Jayne Danska’s study on how sex differences in the gut microbiome drive regulation of autoimmunity – CBC Quirks and Quarks: http://www.cbc.ca/quirks/episode/2013/01/19/january-19-2013/#3).
Application of a sex and gender lens in health research can be used as a lever for innovation within CIHR Signature Initiatives and other strategic investments.

Application of a sex and gender lens in health research can be used as a lever for innovation within CIHR Signature Initiatives and other strategic investments.
What we know:
We know a great deal about the relationship between sex, gender and health – but this knowledge has not fully made its ways into policy and practice.
In order for knowledge users to implement effective interventions that meet the needs of everybody, they require evidence about the effects of sex and gender.
We need to ensure this evidence is more accessible, while recognizing that publication alone is insufficient to bridge the gap between research and widespread impact.
What we need:
To be more dynamic in our approach to promoting and facilitating the full continuum of CIHR’s knowledge translation process – including synthesis, dissemination, exchange and application of knowledge into action.
The solution:
We will transform outcomes of our research (from building more robust knowledge translation approaches into our research proposals, to spreading our results in more targeted and practical ways, and engaging knowledge users earlier in the research process) to advance the meaningful uptake and application of gender, sex and health evidence to close the gap between what we know and what we do with this knowledge.
Linkage to Roadmap:
Directly supports commitments made under Accelerating the Capture of Health and Economic Benefits of Health Research, including: KT capacity building, increased focus solutions-based research, collaboration and partnership building with knowledge users, evidence-informed policy making, and engagement of private sector partners and citizens.
In working across CIHR Signature Initiatives , IGH will help ensure that important sex and gender considerations are taken up, so that when impacts are determined they are not gender-blind but are responsive to the specific needs of men, women, girls and boys.
STRATEGIC EXECUTION
Linking strategic planning with strategic execution: development of an operational plan for the 2013-2015 period
IAB engagement: completion of brainstorming and priority setting exercises designed to identify activities that are feasible, measurable and clearly aligned with our goals. Elevator speech.
Designed to be a living document, our 2013-2015 Operational Plan will ensure that our activities support our strategic directions while remaining aligned with CIHR’s structure and initiatives, evolving federal policies and priorities, the changing needs of our researchers, and the emerging health challenges facing Canadians.
PUBLIC REPORTING OF 2013-2017 PLAN
IGH will move forward with the development of a more user-friendly and engaging public report that effectively and passionately broadcasts IGH’s bigger story – our purpose, our vision and our plans for the future
In addition to communicating our strategic plan for the next five years, this document will promote our past achievements, our distinctive capabilities, and how we intend to harness the momentum surrounding gender, sex and health research to shape science and health in bigger and broader ways.
EVALUATION
Robust evaluation of the execution of our 2013-2017 Strategic Plan is central to the successful achievement of our transformation agenda.
This will require the development of new evaluation tools and indicators to gauge the effectiveness and impact of our work against our goals.
An evaluation framework and performance indicators will be developed to gauge the effectiveness and impact of our efforts towards achievement of our goals.
Desire to work in partnership with our colleagues across CIHR (both centrally and with our partner Institutes) to maximize our capacity, draw on existing data sources, and ensure that our activities and measures align with the broader approach to evaluation at CIHR.
TAKE HOME MESSAGE:
Our new goal-oriented plan strategically positions IGH to build on its reputation for excellence and harness the critical momentum that is driving sex and gender research to new heights, both in Canada and internationally.
Through transforming the structures, processes and outcomes of sex, gender and health research, IGH will make a meaningful and measurable contribution to shaping science and achieving better health for men, women, girls and boys.
