Founded in 1983, The Mayor’s Commission on Literacy was established to ensure that quality education is available to equip all adults in Philadelphia with the literacy skills necessary for the workforce, parenting and community. Mayor Michael Nutter recently charged the Commission with helping more than 550,000 adult Philadelphians who are unable to meet the requirements for entry into post-secondary training or family-sustaining jobs.
