2. Properties of Light LIGHT is a form of energy that you can see. We NEED light to SEE!! Light moves in WAVES. The light waves move in a STRAIGHT LINE. LET’S SING A LITTLE SONG TO HELP US REMEMBER!!
4. REFLECTION When light hits some materials, it will bounce back, or reflect. REFLECTION IS THE BOUNCING OF LIGHT OFF OF A SMOOTH SURFACE. When light reflects from a smooth surface, its rays all bounce back in the same direction. When light reflects from a rough surface, its rays bounce back in different direction.
6. REFRACTION When light passes through different materials (air and water) it bends. REFRACTION IS THE BENDING OF LIGHT! Look at this straw in the glass of water. Can you see where the light makes the straw look bent?
7. ABSORPTION Some materials will ABSORB, or take in, light. When you see the white light of the sun or lamp, you are really seeing light that contains ALL OF THE COLORS OF THE RAINBOW!
8. Why is a banana yellow? A banana appears yellow to us because when light shines on the banan the colors in the light are absorbed EXCEPT for YELLOW. The yellow rays are reflected back into our eyes and that is the color we see.
