Ex.) Aren’t people who regard graphology seriously thought to be silly?
Are not
Grapology, the study of handwriting, (1) is not a new science. Though we (2) don’t know with complete
certainty, (3) it is believed that it began as far back as 1000 B.C. in China and Japan. Many historical figures (4)
did not discount graphology as a “false science.” In fact, Shakespeare wrote, “Give me the handwriting of
woman, and I will tell you her character.” Other figures who (5) did not regard graphology as silly included Sir
Walter Scott, Edgar Allan Poe, Goethe, and both of the Brownings. To prove it (6) was not false, a scientist by
the name of Binet tested seven graphologists in the 1800’s. He showed them the handwriting of different
people and asked, “Who would you pick as intelligent, average, or dull based on their handwriting?” All the
graphologists did better than mere chance would have allowed. Today, there are still people (7) who will call it a
false science, but (8) that’s becoming less frequent. Even the American Medical Association (9) will not call it
that. (10) They have written, “There are definite organic diseases that grapho- diagnostics can help diagnose…”
In the business world, many people consult graphologists before they hire new employees. And so graphology,
once nothing more than a silly parlor game, has grown in respectability, and it shows every sign of continuing to
do this in the future.
