Repetitive strain injury (RSI) is a debilitating condition caused by overusing the hands to perform repetitive tasks like typing, writing, or using a mouse. The primary risk factors are poor posture, technique, overuse, lack of breaks, arthritis, diabetes, obesity, stress, and sedentary lifestyle. Symptoms include fatigue, numbness, weakness, clumsiness, and lack of strength or control in the hands. RSI can lead to inability to perform daily tasks like opening doors, preparing food, driving, and loss of independence. Prevention includes taking regular breaks, maintaining good posture, exercising, calling instead of typing, moving the whole arm to use the mouse, and loosening grip when writing.
