Once zebra mussels establish in a body of water, they are nearly impossible to prevent from spreading elsewhere. Boats and trailers should dry thoroughly for at least five days before boating again to ensure extermination. Zebra mussels have filtered out all the algae which normally would be food for native microscopic organisms. Great Lakes officials estimate $5 billion will be spent in 10 years on zebra mussel control.
