The train from Nouadhibou to Zouerat in Mauritania is the longest train in the world, stretching up to three kilometres long and carrying thousands of tons of crushed rock in up to 200 wagons. Powered by 3 or 4 diesel-electric locomotives, the train transports iron ore from the mines to the port at slow speeds of under 40km/h due to its massive size and weight, with schedules dependent on extraction rates. While not intended for passengers, local Mauritanians and Sahrawis often ride the commercial train.
