Clams live on the Atlantic coast and in the Mediterranean, feeding by filtering small organisms from water. The cultivation of clams in Spain began in the mid-20th century, though clams have existed for over 100 million years in seas near what is now the Region of Murcia, where different types can now be found including blond clams, slug clams, Japanese clams, and fine clams.
