The future of worksimulatedmyinterestandcuriositymore especially aboutHumanCapital,I took interestandaddedmyinput inthe youth community projectnearmy residence, itdiscusses school- basedprogramsthat supportthe social and humancapital developmentof childrenwithdisabilitiesto achieve positive outcomesrelatedtoachievingindividual educationgoals,learningdailylivingskills,and improvingcommunicationandsocial skills.Inadditiontothese outcomes,childrenandyouthwith disabilitiesrequiredevelopmentallyappropriateservicestohelpthembuildskillsforachieving individuallong-termgoalsoutside of educational settings.HumanCapital examinesservicesand programswithevidence tosupporttheirimpactonsocial andhumancapital developmentoutcomes relatedtoemploymentandearnings,communityparticipation,self-determination,andindependent living.Promisingprograms,forwhichrigorousevidence iscurrentlylimited,are alsointroducedwhere appropriate. Althoughthese outcomesfocuslargelyonpostsecondarylife,evidencepresentedindicatesthatservices such as self-determinationorself-advocacytrainingcouldhave positive near-termoutcomesfor childrenandyouth,suchas increasedparticipationingoal settingandindividualizededucationprogram meetings.While acknowledgingthe near-termbenefitsof some of these servicesandprograms,it focusesonhowthese servicesandprogramsleadtopositive intermediateandlong-termoutcomes duringthe transitionfromyouthtoyoungadulthoodandbeyond. Theyalsofocuson strategiesfor improvingthe functionalindependence of youngadultswithdisabilitiesandenablingthemtobecome fullyengagedmembersof theircommunitiesandonprogramssupportingthe additionalneedsof childrenandfamiliesnotmetbydisability-relatedprogramsandservices. The keyconclusionisthat supportingchilddevelopmenthaslarge economicimpact.UNICEFhasbeen arguingthe case for childdevelopmentsince ourinception,andthe HumanDevelopmentReport createdthe Human DevelopmentIndex in1990. It’simportantto recognize thishistory,andsee thisas an importantcontributionthatbuildsonandsupportsthe legacyof all those whowork,and have worked,tosee children’spotential fulfilled.Itaddsnew analysisandattentiontothe relationship betweenchilddevelopmentandthe broaderimpacton economies,whichisacrucial considerationand vital formany policymakers.
