The Whiting-Robertsdale offers a very diverse environment for businesses, industry, and residents. Whiting has a wonderful lakeshore along Lake Michigan with easy access to Chicago. Industries in the area include: BP, Ineos Oligomers, Unilever, and Praxair to name a few. Following will illustrated the various Government Agencies that help make Whiting a successful environment for Businesses, Industry, and Residents.
Every decade the country prepares for a Census as the United States Constitution decreed. As a small city, Whiting’s goal is to achieve 100% participation as this determines the amount of federal monies the city will receive to fund programs.
Forming an Environmental Agency in Indiana is key to the success of protecting the environment working with the Federal Government and EPA standards, but more importantly focusing on the issues and problems that directly effect the citizens in the State of Indiana. The IDEM offers a web site broken down by counties where citizens and businesses alike can access information on Air and Water quality, public notices and safe drinking water.
The IDEM is an invaluable resource for any business when it comes to air quality concerns. Since their inception, they have helped businesses in this area to understand and implement EPA regulations, requirements and changes as necessary. The Whiting BP Refinery, decreased regulated emissions by 68% from 2001-2006 and this is a great example of how Public Administration Agencies can help businesses and the surrounding community. The IDEM working with the EPA played a crucial role in BP obtaining the proper licenses on their expansion project. As part of the modernization, the Refinery is removing older, less efficient equipment, and installing emission controls on upgraded units in order to reduce its environmental footprint. These measures will help reduce regulated emissions by another 7% by 2011.
It is easy to say that one of Whiting’s greatest asset is Lake Michigan and to maintain the quality of the water for future generations, the IDEM has worked closely with the BP Refinerary on their expansion project. As a result of that hard work and cooperation, The Whiting Refinery is making a series of improvements to its waste water treatment facilities to reduce its impact on the environment by adding new desalter units that will remove sodium and chloride which will help prevent disruptions to the waste water treatment plant. The Whiting Refinery is also constructing a new Sour Water Stripper plant that will allow the removal of 98% of the ammonia before it even reaches the waste water treatment plant.
Whiting is very proud of it’s heritage and wants to maintain and safeguard the heritage on which Whiting was built by protecting and preserving historical areas and buildings. By implementing a Historic Preservation Committee at the City level, Whiting will ensure that it’s most treasured areas will be preserved for future generations.
