Dearest Darling Friends,
A colleague of mine whom we fondly call ‘the boss’, came back from her visa interview in US
consulate, mumbai, irritated. On prodding, she shared, ‘Its so unfair. I saw two poor people who did not
know how to present themselves properly, getting their visa rejected. They were told ‘Apply again’.
‘They were poor people. Rs 9000/- (visa application amount)
is too much for them. Its so irritating to see these poor people
getting exploited. I don’t want to go to US any more. How I
wish I had not applied for this visa!!!’ She stomped out of my
cabin. ‘The boss’ is a fun loving, happy, caring person. Her
outburst surprised me.
I realised, in times of disappointment, all anyone wants to
do is to turn the clock back.
The way most of us would love to dream about life is…
So much to look forward to
So much to contribute
So much to achieve
When we take the first step forward, we have this small
niggling bout of doubt. This doubt is similar to our first day at school. Will any other student talk with us? Will we
get a friend or will everyone will laugh at us?
Expectations are little. Little satisfies us. Next step? Those little expectations are met. Next step? When
expectations are met, they have this strange habit of rising higher.
Initially or subsequently, sooner or later, little or more, from one or many, we want something or we ask for
something or we read something or we listen to something or we see something or we anticipate something
that ‘does not meet our expectations’.
We feel disappointed. We feel let down. We feel cheated. We feel ‘regret’.
Sometimes, it will be me who disappoints you. Sometimes it can be a movie star or a sportsperson or an authority
or a friend or a relative or a teacher or even a book, that disappoints you.
Sometimes YOU might be ‘the’ disappointment.
“Wherever there are expectations, there are chances of disappointments.
Wherever there are expectations, there are also chances of excitement.”
We have two stark and remarkable choices. To avoid disappointments and despair, bring down expectations. Do
nothing remarkable, want nothing remarkable, be satisfied with the insignificant that never excites. Lay low.
2. Alternatively, be ready to be disappointed yet ‘keep moving’. Be ready to gather the broken pieces and ‘keep
moving’. Take that step forward into leading the future and living a life with possibilities of excitement.
I have begun to believe, in life, the deeper is my ability to handle disappointments, the higher will be my
excitements.
You see, both excitement and disappointment live on the same path. In fact, they are ‘the path’.
Is one possible without the other? I don’t think so. What do you, my darling reader, believe?
With loads of love, prayers and exceptional wishes,
Narendra Goidani
