Specific Genres generally have tell tale signs of what genre they are for
example horrors, thrillers, sci fi's and others all have tid bits that show what
to expect from the film through the genre.
GENRE RECOGNITION
CHARACTER
• Character representation in horror films seem to show a “damsel” in distress typically a
woman used as a sexual icon in the film, this character usually dies or is in danger the
majority of the film along with always needing the help of another character.
• The antagonist is the main person in the film basing the whole series of events ariund him
and in nightmare on elm street this character is none other than freddie krueger in my
eyes the original slasher. Other films released later some could be called black comedy
such as the final destination series as the deaths are comical and supposed to be funny.
The antagonist in this film is never actually seen but the presence is and this is the devil.
• A hero can be a typical character in the films as either the survivor or an actual hero in the
films.
LOCATION
• This can be a pivotal part of a slasher film (horror sub genre) such as nightmare on elm
street, the first shot in the trailer being the view of a dark diner with a type of aura to it.
• Often the killings happen in an area where the killer is familiar like in NMOES it is on elm
street where he krueger grew up and was also found to be abusive and then murdered by
burning. He develops a hate and somehow lives on in the dreams of teenagers, seeking
revenge on those in the community who killed him.
PROPS & COSTUME
• These can be the most enigmatic part of the character, together they create how we
perceive a character . In NMOES Freddie is noticed by his hat, striped red and black wool
jumper and most significantly his weapon of choice being a razored glove created to slash
the victims.
SOUND
• The eery sound of the dark dingy film builds suspence as a victim is targeted and you can
often tell with a change in aura and the emotions change.
• Freddie krueger has his own nursery rhyme developed for the movies to scare children
and also to signal the impending doom of a victim.
• The rhyme is as follows
• 1,2 Freddie’s Coming for you
• 3,4 Better close your door
• 5,6 grab a crucifix
• 7,8 Gunna Stay up late
• 9,10 Never Sleep Again
