The municipality of Puerto Rico has a mayor-council government structure. The mayor is the chief executive and administrative officer, elected in a partisan election to a four-year term. The municipal legislature is a unicameral body called the municipal legislature, composed of between 9 to 13 members depending on population, who are elected to four-year terms from districts or at-large.
