State of the Neighborhood Report
Overview
Leeo, Inc. a Silicon Valley company that creates smart home products and services that
are simple to use and accessible to everyone, commissioned an omnibus survey on how
well people in the U.S. know their neighbors. The bottom line is that while a majority of
respondents characterized their neighboring style as similar to the Cleavers of “Leave it
to Beaver” fame, they’re not even close.
According to the results, fewer than half know their neighbors well and one in eight
people don’t know their next door neighbors’ first or last names. Although many
Americans don’t know their neighbors, the survey revealed that more than half of them
feel that they can rely on the people in their neighborhoods in times of emergency.
The survey also looked into breakdowns by age and found that millennials know and rely
upon their neighbors the least – and feel slightly less safe in their neighborhoods. They
also speak less to their neighbors compared to other generations and fewer than half are
confident they can rely on their neighbors in times of need.
If knowing our neighbors makes us feel safer in our communities, why don’t more of us
make time for a simple introduction? Leeo aims to make communities safer by
encouraging people to know their neighbors better.

Methodology
The Leeo State of the Neighborhood Report contains results from an omnibus survey
conducted by Edelman Berland from Sept. 22-29, 2014, among 1,000 U.S. residents
ages 18 and over, using two probability samples: randomly selected landline telephone
numbers and randomly selected mobile (cell) telephone numbers. Final data is adjusted
to take the two sample frames into account and then weighted by age, gender, region,
race/ethnicity and education to be proportionally representative of the U.S. adult
population. Results of any sample are subject to sampling variation. The magnitude of
the variation is measurable and is affected by the number of interviews and the level of
the percentages expressing the results. In these particular studies, the chances are 95 in
100 that a survey result does not vary, plus or minus, by more than 3.1 percentage points
from the result that would be obtained if interviews had been conducted with all persons
in the universe represented by the sample. The margin of error for any subgroups will be
slightly higher.

and they’re always up for a
good small talk session. Need
a cup of sugar? These
neighbors are always a sure
bet.
38% - Up for the occasional chat over
the back fence
These are the neighbors that are
friendly, but not overly involved or
likely to go out of their way to come
by. A wave from the street or a “hi”
during the holidays may be the most
interaction you’ll have. Wilson of
“Home Improvement” was known to
only really communicate with The
Taylors from behind his fence.

Most people don’t get to choose or
get to know whom their neighbors
are; some live for years in one
place not knowing their next door
neighbors’ first or last name. In the
words of Marshall and Lily from
“How I Met Your Mother,” don’t

Need a cup of sugar? These neighbors are always a sure bet. 38% - Up for the occasional chat over the back fence These are the neighbors that are friendly, but not overly involved or likely to go out of their way to come by. A wave from the street or a “hi” during the holidays may be the most interaction you’ll have. Wilson of “Home Improvement” was known to only really communicate with The Taylors from behind his fence. 10% - Never talk to my neighbors Most people don’t get to choose or get to know whom their neighbors are; some live for years in one place not knowing their next door neighbors’ first or last name. In the words of Marshall and Lily from “How I Met Your Mother,” don’t learn the hard way and never talk to thy neighbors.

Someone that always has to know what everyone else in the neighborhood is doing, whether it affects her or not. <1% - You’ve been known to overstay your welcome They probably need you more than you need them, kind of like Kramer to Jerry of Seinfeld. These neighbors don’t see personal boundaries (or personal space) and don’t often make the connection between inappropriate behavior and social norms.
