In column 8: {AD8 is [3456] and FH8 is [789]} or { AD8 is [4567] and FH8 is [123]}. If
FH8 were [789] then H8=7, H9=6, G9=7, F9=8, F8=9 and G8=8. It would follow that
in row H, eliminating 67 would leave a naked pair of 45s, which in turn would leave a
naked pair of 12s, solving H3 for 3. It would also follow that in row G, eliminating 78,
the stranded 9 and the 3 in G3, would leave three cells containing only [45], which
would be impossible. Thus FH8 cannot be [789] and must be [123].

Jan's way forward

  • 1. In column 8: {AD8 is [3456] and FH8 is [789]} or { AD8 is [4567] and FH8 is [123]}. If FH8 were [789] then H8=7, H9=6, G9=7, F9=8, F8=9 and G8=8. It would follow that in row H, eliminating 67 would leave a naked pair of 45s, which in turn would leave a naked pair of 12s, solving H3 for 3. It would also follow that in row G, eliminating 78, the stranded 9 and the 3 in G3, would leave three cells containing only [45], which would be impossible. Thus FH8 cannot be [789] and must be [123].
