Album magazine advert
analysis; 1
This magazine advert is almost identical to the front cover of the album in order o create a memorable
consistency for the audience. At the top of the advert is the artists name “Florence + the machine”, in a large
and bright white font so that it stands out to the audience when looking through the magazine and grabs there
attention. It is conventional for the artist name to be at the top of the advert.The title is also in a different font
to the rest of the text on the advert to stand out over all the other text.The album title is essential for the
magazine advert in order to make the audience aware of what product is being promoted An image of the
artist is used as a focal point for the advert to reinforce the artist image.The mise en scene in the magazine
such as flower and birds infer an “hippie” appearance and style which would appeal and relate to the target
market for this album.The advert is dark with the main colour being black, the black background contract with
the white light colours allowing the artist and text to stand out.The colour pallet and tones create a mysterious
feel about the advert. At the bottom of the page is a list of the different forms the album can be purchased in to
inform the audience how to purchase the item and to tempt them into buying the product. Father information
on the artist is listed at the bottom such as a website which promotes the artist and their music.The date the
album is realised is also at the bottom of the page to allow the audience to know all the information they need
to buy the product. As conventional seen the biggest text on the advert is the album title “lungs” which is in a
large bold white font in contrast to the black background which makes the text stand out considerably. It draws
the audience eye to the page and informs them of the album title.The title of the album is emphasised by the
large lungs placed on the artist chest in the image This advert conforms to Carlson's theory of commercial
exhibitionist .The design promotes the band and sell the image of the band.The pink of the flowers attracts a
more feminine audience which would be the main target audience.The pink also adds to the sense of love and
romance which is a common theme of the songs on the album.The pose that the artist is seen laying in can be
seen as sexual therefore attracting a male audience as it conforms to the male gaze theory. The legal
information is conventionally at the bottom of the page such as on this magazine advert normally in a small
font as its not as important to the audience as the other information.
