Paragraphs are the same way:<br />All paragraphs have a main idea, supporting details, and a closing sentence.<br />MAIN IDEA SENTENCE + SUPPORTING DETAILS + CLOSING SENTENCE = PARAGRAPH. <br />You can change the number of supporting details to make your paragraph more interesting and drool-worthy, just like a hamburger.<br />

Like this:<br />Topic sentence:<br />Ancient Polynesians developed a complex system of navigation that allowed them to travel the vast ocean. <br />Supporting Detail #1:<br />Instead of using compasses and other navigation tools, Polynesians relied on the stars.<br />Supporting Detail #2<br />By understanding positions of stars in the sky and the ocean tides, Polynesians were able to locate lands far across the sea.<br />Supporting Detail #3<br />When explorers in Europe were just beginning to set out, Polynesians had been making regular voyages across the Pacific Ocean for hundreds of years.<br />Supporting Detail #4<br />In modern Hawai`i, this tradition is commonly known as “Wayfinding.”<br />Closing Sentence:<br />These voyages represent an important cultural tradition for Polynesians that continues today.<br />
