“Egle - the Queen
of Grass-snakes”
“Eglė – žalčių karalienė”
Tai viena iš žymiausių
ir įdomiausių
lietuviškų pasakų,
atskleidžianti tvarų
žmogaus ir gamtos
ryšį bei aiškinanti
medžių kilmę.
It is one of the most
popular and oldest
Lithuanian folk
tales which reveals
the relationship
between man and
nature and explains
the origin of the
trees.
Tai atsitiko seniai, labai
seniai. Eglė kartu su
seserimis nuėjo maudytis.
Grįžusios į krantą, Eglės
marškinių rankovėje rado
susirangiusį žaltį, vardu
Žilvinas. Žaltys pažadėjo
grąžinti marškinius, jei
Eglė už jo ištekės.
Išsigandusi Eglė sutiko
tapti žalčio žmona.
That happened long long
time ago.
Once Egle went swimming
with her sisters.When they
returned to the seashore,
they found the grass
snake named Zilvinas
curled up in the sleeve of
the Egle’s blouse. The
grass snake promised to
give a blouse back in
exchange for the Egle’s
word to marry him. Egle
was scared and gave her
word.
Lenktyniuoja, raitos
Bangos ties krantu. –
Trys žvejų mergaitės
Sukasi ratu.
Stebisi mergaitės,
Žiūri visos trys:
Tūno susiraitęs
Marškiniuos žaltys
• Race as the riders
• Waves near the cost
• Three of fishmen girls
• Dance and spin around.
• What a wonder happened!
• Look they all together
• In the sleeve of shirt
• Curling up a serpent.
Po vestuvių Eglė pamatė,
kad jos vyras visai ne
šlykštus žaltys, o jaunas ir
išvaizdus vyriškis. Jaunoji
pora laimingai gyveno
Baltijos jūros dugne. Jie
susilaukė keturių vaikų:
sūnų Ąžuolo, Uosio ir
Beržo bei dukrelės
Drebulės.
After the marriage Egle
found out that her
husband wasn’t an ugly
grass snake. Actually, he
was a young and
handsome man.The couple
lived happily on the
bottom of the Baltic sea.
They had three sons:
Azuolas – Oak, Uosis –
Ash, Berzas – Birch and a
daughter Drebule – a little
Aspen.
Slenka, bėga metai
Kaip giedri diena.
O dukters nemato
Tėviškė sena.
Eglė karalienė
Mėlynų bangų, –
Čia ji naktį dieną
Saugoma sargų.
Jai kiekvienas draugas, –
Ji visiems gera.
Trys sūneliai auga
Ir viena dukra.
• Time is going
• Years are passing
• As a moment, like a flashing.
• Homeland’s longing for her daughter.
• She’s a queen now of the waters.
• Day and night under the guards
• For every soul she opens heart.
• Three sons she’s raising
• and the daughter...
Prabėgo devyneri
metai. Eglė pasiilgo
tėviškės. Ji ilgai prašė
Žilvino leisti jai
aplankyti tėvus, kol
pagaliau, vyras
nusileido ir sutiko. Jis
ją ir vaikus išmokė
užkalbėjimo, kuriuo
bus galima jį pašaukti,
kai paviešėję norės
grįžti namo:
Nine years passed by. Egle
missed her family and
longed for the parents’
home. She asked Zilvinas
to let her go and see them.
Her husband didn’t want to
do that but finally
agreeded. He taught Egle
and the kids some special
words to call out for him
when they would like to
come back to the sea.
• Žilvinai, Žilvinėli, jei tu gyvas – atplauk
balta pieno puta, jei negyvas – juoda
kraujo puta
• Zilvinas, dear Zilvinas, if you are alive –
• Come to me as a white milky foam,
• If you are dead –
• Come to me as a black bloody foam.
Eglė turėjo dvylika brolių.
Jie buvo labia laimingi
matydami sugrįžusią
seserį ir nusprendė
neleisti jai grįžti atgal pas
tą “šlykštų žaltį”.
Vieną naktį broliai
nusivedė Eglės sūnūs į
mišką ir pradėjo juos
tardyti, kokiu būdu motina
gales grįžti į jūrą. Vaikai
buvo gąsdinami ir mušami,
bet neištarė nei žodžio.
Egle had twelve brothers.
They were very happy to
see their youngest sister
after such a long time. Her
brothers decided not let
her come back to that
“ugly snake”.
At night they took the sons
of Egle to the woods and
questionned them how
their mother could return
to the sea. The sons were
threatened and even
beaten but didn’t say
anything.
• Tada broliai atsivedė mažąją Drebulę. Ji labia išsigando
ir pasakė tėvo išmokytus žodžius.
• Then the brothers took a little Aspen. She was scared
with the threats and betrayed the words.
Drebulėlė klūpo,
Dreba ties medžiu – –
Dėdės ją išlupo
Vytiniu skaudžiu.
Upeliu jai teka
Ašaros – graudu.
Drebulė pasako:
– Žilvinas vardu.
• Kneeling down
• Under the tree
• A little aspen cries shivering.
• The uncles beat her
• Severely and hard
• Her tears flowing down
• And fall on the ground.
• She whispers:
• Zilvinas named...
• Dvylika brolių nuėjo į pajūrį, pakvietė Žilviną ir jį
nužudė.Twelve brothers came to the seashore, called
out for Zilvinas and killed him.
Dešimtą dieną Eglė su
vaikais paliko tėvų
namus ir nuėjo prie
jūros. Ji pašaukė savo
vyrą ir juoda kraujo
puta atplaukė prie jos
kojų.
On the tenth day Egle
with the kids left her
parents’ home and
came to the seashore.
She called out for her
husband and a black
foam of blood came to
her.
– Žilvine, Žilvinėl,
Jau saulelė žemai. –
Žilvine, Žilvinėl, –
Kur namučiai namai?
Jei tu gyvas – atplauk
Balta pieno puta.
Jei negyvas – atplauk
Juoda kraujo puta!
• Zilvinas, dear Zilvinas
• The sun is going down
• Zilvinas, dear Zilvinas
• We would like to come home.
• If you’re alive –
• Come to us as a white milky foam,
• If you’re dead –
• Come to us as a black bloody foam
Be baigos atvangos
Dunda jūra gili.
Ir banga už bangos
Atskuba iš toli.
Baltaskarių bangų
Vainiku apsupta,
Atliūliuoja… Baugu!
Juoda kraujo puta.
• Without the beginning, without the end
• The sea is roaring, the sea is rumbling.
• And a wave after a wave is rushing to the shore.
• What is coming there in a crowd of white-headed
waves?
• What a horror..
• That’s a black bloody foam...
Iš sielvarto Eglei plyšo
širdis. Ji užkeikė savo
vaikus virsti medžiais.
Sūnūs tapo ąžuolu,
uosiu ir beržu. O
baimingoji dukrelė –
visuomet virpančia
drebule. Pati našlė
virto žaliąja egle.
That broke Egle’s
heart. She cursed her
kids: the sons turned
to the trees: a strong
oak, an ash and a
birch. The frightened
daughter was turned to
a forever shivering
aspen. A widow herself
turned into a
evergreen fir.
Ne vėjinga nakčia
Lūžo nendrė žalia –
Laužė Eglę kančia,
Sielvartinga dalia.
Trys žaltienės sūnai
Žvelgia rūsčiai, stačiai,
O dukrelė… Jinai
Vien kukčioja karčiai.
Keikia prakeiksmu ją
Motinėlė tikra:
– Būk prakeikta!.. Deja!
Išdavikė dukra!
Not a green cane
Was broken at a windy
night.
That sorrow and grief
broke Egle down.
Three her sons stand
strong and firm.
Just a daughter... She’s
crying severe.
Mother cursed her – a
traitor:
Virski drebule tu! –
Visais lapais drebėk!
Paukštis joks
nenutūps
Prie tavęs, nečiulbės.
Tešukuos, tegu raus
Vėtra plaukus piktai!
Tegu lietūs išpraus
Tau veidelį baltai!
- Turn into the aspen,
Shake with your
leaves.
No bird ever lands
No bird ever sings
On your shivering
branches.
Let storms brush your
hair,
Let storms tear them
up,
Let the rains wash yor
face...
Jums nelemta, sūnai,
Augt berneliais dailiais!
Jus užkeikiu nūnai: –
Virskit medžiais žaliais!
Ąžuolas šiuos laukuos
Bus miškų pažiba.
Uosis oš. Ir kukuos
Gegužėlė raiba.
Ir Berželis… Prie jo
Liemenėlio dailaus
Mergužėlė rymos,
Kai bernužio ji lauks.
• Not your fate, dear sons,
• Grow up as handsome boys.
• Under my curse
• You turn into the green trees.
• In these fields an oak
• Will be a king of the woods.
• An ash will sough
• And we’ll hear a cuckoo.
• And a birch...
• A young girl will lean to its trunk
• When a boy should come...
O pačiam vidury,
Užsiskleidus skara,
Aš – Eglelė niūri –
Seno žvejo dukra.
Ir vienodai tamsi
Vasarėlė žiema –
Mėlynam liūdesy
Rymosiu laukdama.
Man prie šono linguos
Čia sūnai milžinai – –
Priešais jūra banguos
Amžinai, amžinai – – –
• And in the middle of you
• With a kierchief on head
• Stand me –an old fisherman’s daughter –
• A dark fir..
• Summer or winter
• Evergreen, everdark
• In the blue sorrow
• I’ll wait for...
