The Doctors Office with Killer
(Off stage): Andrew Clarke, Doctor Walsh will see you now.
Andrew walks on stage.
Doctor: Morning Lieutenant Clarke, please take a seat.
Clarke dressed in black sits down.
Doctor flicks through his pages.
Doctor: So it says here you fought in the war for 7 year.
Clark nods silently in agreement.
Doctor: You served under Colonel Finch, and he awarded you the Golden Rose for loyalty and
obedience, is that right?
Clark drops his head as if he is a ashamed.
Doctor: What is the matter? Do you not think yourself worthy of such an honourable award?
Clarke (angrily): There is now honour in war. How the world can pull Gold medals from a sea full of
mud and blood I will never understand. You kill a man and they give you a medal, that‟s how it goes.
Doctor: So you killed a man then?
Clarke (Reflective but blunt): I looked him in the eye and pulled the trigger. He looked so scared,
until it hit him, then it just went quiet.
Doctor: Talk me through what happened that day.
Clarke looks out to audience as the light dim.
2. Act 1, Scene 2
Flashback- In the Forest
Soldiers walking through the forest looking for Jeremy
Coronel Finch finds Caitlin and forcefully pulls her to the centre of the group
Aisling: Sir, I found one.
Jerry: Please, I just want to go home. I never wanted to be a soldier. Please, I am only doing my duty,
for my father.
Finch (from behind Jerry): Stop your snireling, and take it like a man.
Finch: Clark, over her.
Eilise (Clark) marches over.
Clark: Yes, Sir.
Finch: Make him suffer like your grandfather had to suffer.
Finch hands Clark the gun.
Finch: Take the shot. Didn‟t you hear me, I said take the shot.
Clarke remains hesitant and tense.
Jerry: Please, I beg you. Have mercy!
Finch: What are you waiting for? Take the shot for God‟s sake.
Clarke: I can‟t!
Finch: Shot him! Now!
Clarke shoots Jerry
Clarke: I, I
Chanice (soldier) taps Clarke on the shoulder.
Aisling: Come on!
Ciara(soldier): Let‟s get out of here boys!
All soldiers leave.
Orla (soldier) comes out of the hiding to find jerry dead.
Orla – Whispers: Jerry, Jerry.
- Shouts: No, oh God no. Jerry don‟t leave me here on my own. Jerry!
3. Act 2, Scene 1
Killer’s father with the therapist
Off-stage: Edward Clarke, Doctor Walshe will sew you now.
Clarke walks on stage.
Doctor:Morning Mr. Clarke, take a sat there.
Clarke: Morning.
Doctor: So, I was speaking to your son earlier.
Clarke: I know. He hates me doesn‟t he?
Doctor: Why would you think that?
Clarke: He says that it‟s my fault. And I suppose he‟s right. I told him to go to war. He wasn‟t doing
anything with his life, I thought that the arm would whip him into shape.
Doctor: do you regret it?
Clarke: I don‟t‟ know It seemed like the right thing to do st the rime and he vales life more now. But
at the same time, he seems more troubled.
Doctor: Well, are you proud of him?
Clarke: Yeah, he won a medal!
Doctor: yes, The Golden Rose.
Clarke: I won the same medal when I was a lad and my father id before me.
Doctor: I see, so it‟s a bit of a family tradition then.
Clarke: It was, but I doubt Andrew would encourage his son to go to war. He wouldn‟t be able to say
goodbye to him like that.
Doctor: talk me through the day you said goodbye to Andrew before he left.
4. Act 2, Scene 2
Killer’s father sending him to war
Edward (father):Come on, they‟ll be here to collect you soon.
Andrew: Would you stop fussing. We have plenty of time..
Edward: This is the army you are joining. The war isn‟t going to wait for your late arrival.
Andrew walks in with a coat and a bag.
Andrew: Well, let‟s go then.
Edward: You‟re not going anywhere looking like that.
Andrew: Like what?
Edward: You can‟t wear a uniform properly, can you?
Andrew: Well, if my school years were anything to go by, ten I guess the answer is expecting is no.
Edward: Andrew please this is your second chance.
Andrew: Second chance at what?
Edward: You‟re 36 Andy! You quit your job, you‟re divorced and you‟re living with your parents!
This is your second chance at life!
5. Act 3, Scene 1
Ally at the Doctor’s office
(Off stage): Ally Doyle to the Doctor‟s office.
She walks on stage.
Doctor: Good morning Mrs Doyle.
Ally: Morning Doctor.
Doctor: Please take a seat
She sits down, look a little nervous
Doctor: Could I offer you a cup of tea?
Ally: No thank you
Doctor: Not a tea-drinker then?
Ally: Not any more. I used to spend half of my time making tea. HE loved his cuppa so he did.
Doctor: I take it, that when you say he you man M. Doyle.
Ally(teary eyed): I told him not to go to war, they never come back from those dark corners of the
world.
Doctor:But he went anyway?
Ally (looking up at the doctor): He said what he always said, “I‟ll follow you home”
Pause- Silence
Ally: That‟s how we met you see, he used to follow me home from work. (Smiling). When we would
get to my house he would ask me to marry him. He didn‟t give up until he said yes.
Doctor: But he didn‟t follow you home this time?
Ally: No, he didn‟t come home at all.
Doctor: That must have been hard for you.
Ally: It stillis. I was expecting a baby at the time, I was hoping he would be home before the little one
was born. The say they came to tell me that my Jerry was gone, ha well I saw a solder at the door and
thought it was him.
Doctor: And who was it?
Ally: I don‟t know, I didn‟t even look at his face. All I saw was the telegram he was holding in his
hands. It was bright yellow, with the words „We regret to inform you‟ in bold at the top.
6. She takes a deep breath.
Ally: That‟s all I saw, and I knew he wasn‟t following me anymore.
Doctor: tell me what happened that day from the start.
Act 3, Scene 2
Ally’s house
Ally in the kitchen talking to neighbour.
A knock on the door
Ally opens the door, smiling when she sees the uniform. Then her face falls.
Ally: What‟s, what‟s happened?
Deliver: Sorry ma‟am.
Deliver leaves.
Ally clears vigorously
Neighbour: (Trying to comfort her)
Ally: He‟s gone! He‟s gone! Just go!
7. Act 4, Scene 1
Ella at the Doctors office
(Off stage): Ella Doyle, the doctor is ready for you.
Doctor: Good morning Ella. You can take a seat there.
She sits down, Doctor filling out a form.
Ella looks at a frame on the desk. She picks it up to look at it.
Ella: Is this your Dad?
Doctor takes the frame to look at it
Doctor: yeah, he used to be like my best friend.
Ella: But, not anymore?
Doctor:No. He passed away a couple of years back.
Ella: You must miss him.
Doctor: I do. (Pause) You must miss your Dad too.
Ella: I never knew him. He was gone before I came along.
Doctor: He died serving for a good cause, he was fighting for you.
Ella: that‟s what everyone always says.
Doctor: But not you?
Ella: I don‟t know. I just wish I had the chance to know him.
Doctor: Does your mother ever tell you about him?
Ella: Not really, But sometimes I feel like he is there watching over me, Silly isn‟t it?
Doctor: Not at all
Ella: We‟ve started to learn about the war in history class. Everyone thinks it‟s over.
Doctor: But you don‟t?
Ella: The effects of war will never end. Well not for me anyway.
