TrendsTalk 2013 - What's in a name

Editor's Notes

  • #3 For example St. Lawrence College’s domain name is stlawrencecollege.caAll domain names end with something called a domain suffix, such as .com, .org or .ca. These can help to identify the type of website, weather its commercial or not for profit, or even the geographical location of the website or audience (.ca, .se, .dk)
  • #4 Whenever someone visits a website, that site’s domain name appears in the address bar of the webs browser.
  • #5 Every website has a domain name which serves as an internet “address” and allows access to the site. They help people find the sites they’re looking for.
  • #6 Domain names are relatively cheap to purchase, but do need to be renewed every few years.Anyone can buy a domain name, this gives people the option (as I’m sure you all know) to purchase unique names for their own websites or blogs. Unfortunately due to the internets ever increasing popularity and the sheer amount of users and content on the web today, it is extremely difficult to find a domain name that isn’t already in use.
  • #8 Here is where it gets tricky. As we just mentioned it is very difficult in this day and age to find a domain name that isn’t already registered by someone else. I’m sure you’ve all experienced this. Trying to create new account, blog or website, you have the perfect name in mind but then, “sorry. This name has already been taken by someone else”. Then you have to tweek it, adding some extra letters, a few numbers to the end just make it unique. Now we have a question for you guys!Have any of you actually taken the time to Google your own name?I know we have, and we found out some pretty interesting stuff… which we will tell you about at Trends Talk.
